Hello Gents,
On my '09 1125R, I recently had a failed stator replaced (at 2800 mi) shortly after the wire harness update was done. Every thing seems fine thus far (800 miles since new stator) but I notice something strange with my fan. After a long ride and turning bike off and removing key, the fan only stays on for about 5 - 10 seconds. It never used to shut off this quick. (Normally, I remember the fan staying on for at least a full minute or so). Then about 15 - 20 seconds later I hear a short "beep" sound followed immediately by what sounds like the fan trying to come on. It starts to spool up and immediately spools down...all within a few seconds. About 20 seconds go by and I hear the "beep" again followed by the fan spool up and down again. This same cycle continued numerous times. Anybody have thoughts on what this might be? Is it a bad relay or switch possibly? Any input from you guys is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

beep noise is normal for the fuel pump. it cycles to try and help keep vapor lock from happening due to higher temps. the short fan run period is either because the engine temp is low enough or your batt voltage is low enough that the ecm cuts it off prior to the one minute run time counter for the fan

I did fail to mention (whether it has relevance or not), but I did install FMF Apex slip-on and the Erik Buell Racing ecm programmed for the Apex, immediately after stator was replaced. I never recall hearing the fuel pump cycle after turning bike off in the past. If indeed the ecm is cutting off fan, is this to save battery voltage needed for restart? And actually, If the bike is off and no longer making additional heat, does it really matter if the fan runs for 1 minute? It will cool simply by being off, correct? So if what you say about cycling for vapor lock prevention, and the ecm shutting down the fan, should I consider this normal characteristics of the bike and not be concerned? Being different from what I was used to is what made me concerned. Please advise. Thanks.

Forgive my ignorance, but the "beep" and spool sound I hear is exactly the same sound I hear when I turn the key on (fuel pump) so what you've said sounds reasonable. However as stated, I had just never heard this before, after riding and turning the bike off. Maybe it was always occurring but never heard by me as this is when the fan was normally running as well. All in all maybe there is no need for concern. I will ride several more times and see what happens. If battery voltage varies maybe this short fan running time is just a hit and miss type of thing depending on battery voltage when bike is shut off?

if your bike did not have the latest flash prior to the wiring update, that could explain why it was not heard. i live in charleston with a lot of high temps as of late. if i do a bunch of stop and go bad traffic driving right before i get to the house, just like thur, the fan will run for a very short period of time if at all. if you ever want to verify it, ride home with your cluster and keep and eye on the trends. it is on a engine temp vs min batt voltage table.

engine temp C batt voltage
60 12.5
75 12.2
80 12.0
85 11.8

these are the min voltages for fan operation. there is also another line for min batt voltage of 11.5 for fan operation.

so depending on how charged the batt is because of temps outside and traffic, you may see different run times of the fan.

there is also several tables refering to engine temp and fuel pressure setpoints to maintain with key off, a function that can also be turned off if batt voltage gets too low.

If your fan never stays on long, you probably have an issue with the charging system. The other sounds you're hearing are normal.

When my bike was running fine, the fan would always stay on for a while, but after getting the battery warning light a couple times, the fans would never be on for more than a few seconds until i got my harness upgrade rewired and th voltage regulator replaced
