Question: Is it officially stated either by HD or Buell that the stator nut should be tightened tighter than the manual currently recommends, and where?

FWIW - I had my CR out at 6:30pm tonight, it was 85+ degrees and I got stuck in a bit of traffic for less than ten minutes. The battery light went on so I toggled over to see less than 12 volts. 2100 miles on a new stator and the battery light goes on? the stator is dying with about the same miles as the old one did at 2300 miles.

I checked the battery terminals when I got to my destination, they were tight.

so from what I understand, part of the problem is that the stator wiring runs too close to the housing, and does not receive proper oil flow to cool it down.
Is this correct?
Is it possible to shim the stator out a hair from the housing to allow more oil flow past the wiring?
Will shimming it effect the magnetic field?
I'm just trying to throw out ideas.

Didn't someone have their stator rewound? How is that working out? Is this a viable fix?

AVC, I'm not sure when they got it, but my bike is awaiting block-off time on the schedule to be reassembled post-stator failure.

It was dropped off the last Saturday of July, I'm getting it back this coming wednesday, so if you're waiting for one, call and see if it has shipped/arrived!

As I understand it, this how the harness upgrade works. I'm not saying it's right because it's not. My whole gripe with the harness upgrade is that it cannot handle long periods of idling in high temps without discharging the battery. If your battery isn't brand new or if you are using any electronic accessories you have even less of a margin of error.

There are solutions and there are band aids. The harness upgrade is a ban
d aid : (

My band aid has been holding fine.

Sounds awfully similar to all of your posts about how perfect your stator was...until it failed.

It looks like we have been through the first major wave. It seems a lot of bike have gotten the band aid and then the stators failed quickly. Let us all get another 5k miles on the new stator + band aid and see where we are before we declare success.

well the band-aid may hold for awhile I had my first stator replaced in May and now my second replacement was done last Friday and yes the harness was done when the first was replaced in May.

Yes like I said in another post, it is too early to tell, but I am doing everything possible that would make it fail. Never exceeding 4000rpm, lots of electrical accessories, tons of restarts and battery draining key on engine off idles.

Froggy,

I am curious. What electrical accessories are you running? How low does your voltage drop at idle? And are you seeing many battery lights or SYS VOLTAGE errors? Do you use a tender?

When it's hot (fans running) I consistenly get a battery light at idle with with the brake light (like on a hill) or the turn signal engaged.

Froggy - Your hometown Mahopac, N.Y. is an exurb of NYC,NY. Mahopac pop. 8,478 is a commuter town with no government of it's own, a hamlet. How close to NYC do you ever get on a Hot day? How about a shot of the bike in Central Park at 90+ degrees on a weekday afternoon anytime after 3:00pm and then a shot in traffic leaving Manhattan and going home. Repeat daily and let us know how it's working.

The issue is urban environments isn't it?

It seems like it is. I am probably one of those people that ride the bike exactly on the scenarios where i guess the stator would fail (expect for the "below 5k rpm part").

LA, summer, daily commute through traffic, streets and fwy. My voltage is All over the place. Bike starts in the morning at 14.5,..i try to keep the RPMs over 5k at all times but i do drop below that a couple of times a day. No high beams, no accessories.

Waiting at lights drops down to 12.3. The interesting thing is that like i said it jumps all over the place,...i look down at some point and im at 14.1 look down 3 seconds later (no change in riding style) and its at 13.2 or smth similar. My battery light showed up last night when parking,..so i took out the Firebolt today.

Man i wish someone would come up with a solution,..i would be so glad to pay whatever it is.

I'm the friend Daniii was talking about. My stator official failed 2 days of riding after the harness upgrade. Trickle charger overnight got the voltage back up to around 13.8 but it would drop as soon as I started moving again. The lowest I saw it was when I parked it the last time, and that was 9.5.
Good news is that the wonderful dealer in Colorado (High Country) found me a stator in TX, and is having it overnighted to them.
Bad news is that I'm back home in UT, while the bike is still in CO.

We'll see what happens once I get the bike back. My biggest question is if an '08 stator was put in there, would that fix the problem?

nightmare1,
you have to put an 08 stator and rotor in the bike, the 08 stator does not fit on the 09 rotor. The 08 stator does not fry like the 09's, but the 08's are lower power output, and some people have had problems running accessories on the 08 stators.

If my stator goes out, i think i will get it rewound, it only costs $150, which imo is a great deal if it will solve the problem.

What electrical accessories are you running?

Garmin Zumo 550 GPS, XM Antenna, heated suit + grips (obliviously not much summer use), phone charger, usually have high beam on during the day. I got more goodies to install like my Veypor race computer and a tire pressure monitor. My XB used to be loaded up with this and more.

I am running a Erik Buell Racing race ECM with lower idle, so the voltages do drop into the 12's when idle (I don't do much idle with engine on). Battery light almost never comes on, even with sitting at a light totally draining by having the fans on, both lights, and whatever else without the engine running to at least maintain some charge. Last time I got the sys volt error, was the night this thread was started by me : )

Danny, I am an hour drive from NYC, I don't work there so when I do go there, its usually for a special event. I personally hate the city, driving in it is too
stressful. I do hit Boston traffic more often though.

My stator was replaced 8-11-10 and I took my 09 to Paradise H-D in Tigard, OR on 8-3-10. They also replaced the VR "just in case" they said even though "it wasn't required under warranty".

When I trailered the 1125r up there I took along a list of parts that I copied off of this site that had the actual H-D part #'s. One of those part #'s was the whole stator engine case cover. It just so happens I dropped the bike @ 3mph the 3rd day I owned it. They asked me if I would buy it for $195 and they would put it on while they had it apart,, I said Yes!.

I believe Paradise H-D was all over it from day one and they kept me informed along the way. Plus I got the Ace Buell Mech "Jessie" to work on it. "Rocky" is the service manager,, you couldn't ask for a better person to listen to all your concerns and relay that info to the mechanic. My hat's off to ya Paradise H-D, Thank You!

well after much time and deciding on what to do about my charging system I went ahead with what I wanted to do and got me a new battery and the FH012 Mosfet regulator. So this means that I have a brand new charging system (rewound stator, VR, and battery) Here are my results from what I saw with the volts: when at idle, with fans on and low beams (35 watt HIDs) on the volts never got below 13.7 for the 5 minutes I let it run, but once I turn on the hi beams with it (35 watt HIDs also) then I see the volts slowly drop. I saw it got to as low as 12.6 (no battery lite or SYSTEM VLTG ERROR) and thats when I reved the engine to 2000 RPMs, I kept it there for a few seconds and then the volts came back up and stopped at 13.9-14. so when it comes to normal driving you will not see a major drop in volts with all HID lites on while the RPMs are above 2K. (while normal driving the volts never got below 13.7) and when you just have low beams on and with the fans running even at long stop lights at idle the volts never dropped below 13.7 I will say that I am NOT using the harness HD put in, actually i used some of the wires from that harness to hook up the new VR (thanks HD) another thing that I noticed is that the IC no longer flickers. SOOOOO in conclusion, I am very happy with the results of this, aside from having all lites on when at idle (doubt there will be much of that while doing intown driving at nite) the volts stay pretty close to that 14 mark. all in all I would recommend it. and if any of you guys do go this route...remove that harness : )

$125.00 rewound stator from Custom Rewind
$114.oo for the FH012 Mosfet Regulator http://roadstercycle.com/Universal%20Mosfet%20FH01 2AA%20charging%20system%20upgrade.htm
$26.00 for the Regulator Connectors
http://www.easternbeaver.com/Main/Elec__Products/C onnectors/R_R_Connectors/r_r_connectors.html
and finally...$$$ for whatever new battery of your chosing. the one i got was $80 so in total I paid $345.00 (not including shipping for sending the stator to get rewound) for a new charging system.

one last note, I did not have to do any soldering to hook up the new VR

I think you did it the right way, I plan on letting HD pay for my Stator and then I will install the Mosfet Regulator. I think that will give me some piece of mind. Thanks for all the write up's Ultimo Justin, lot's of help there.

My bike (09 R) still at the dealer (took it in July 15th) waiting for a stator. I asked what they had found out on the instrument cluster and they told me that they had to wait until the stator came in before checking into the cluster, but they didn't know WHY they had to wait, just that they have to. I have an 08 flywheel that I bought on E-Bay and out of curiosity asked the dealer how much for the 08 stator. The guy asked me to sit down ..... then told me it would be $1023.95 CAD

I miss riding my bike ..... People, are we fighting a loosing battle here?

The way I see it, the problem with the Buell isn't the stator. It is the warranty. If we didn't have the warranty we would just rewind the stators for $150 and be done with it within 7-10 days. Instead, since we have this warranty we sit around and bitch about the dealers and HD taking weeks to months to fix this known problem with the same crappy problem.
