My bike developed this weird rattling type sound.. almost sounds like a nut bouncing around or something around 4000 RPM or a little bit before, in any gear, if the bike is warmed up or not.

Happened right after my first service... mechanic took for a ride and wondered why the hell I didn't hear that sound on the way in, but I'm pretty sure it didn't do that.

I'm used to the noisy mechanic sound of the motor, this was much different. Anyway it's back at the shop, but I was wondering if anyone has dealt with this problem before?

Thanks

I have that exact sound Lucky ... it's right between 3,600 and 4,000 RPM in any gear, whether the bike's hot or cold. Went away completely on my last oil change (6k miles) and hasn't done it since! Don't know what would cause/solve it ... didn't change the filter element per the service chart, replaced the left side oil plug seal after cleaning the shavings from the magnet. Replace reused the right side oil plug seal ring as it's thicker ... hasn't been in issue in 1k miles so far.

So yeah, I don't know what it is, but mine went away, haha. I did notice I only used 2.5 qts of Mobil1 V-Twin 20W-50 (full synthetic) so I under-filled it just a bit.

I get an injector type ticking sound between 3-3.5k RPMs in any gear... or atleast I think it's an injector.

It's hard to tell with this motor - it always sounds like a bag full of grenades falling off a cliff!

See if you can narrow the location of that particular sound down with a stethascope or a screwdriver...starting at the stator cover..

Funny that you mentioned an exhaust leak.. on my way home my right toes were burning up beyond anything they've done before, and I've been out riding in hot days. I was thinking off-hand if I had an exhaust leak, or if the clutch was radiating a ton of heat or something.

Weird that it just went away for you, Jeep! It's quite bothersome since it developed out of nowhere, so I'm assuming it's not a "normal" noise.

Ticking might be a better way to describe this noise, it is quite loud compared to the rest of the motor as well. I still have stock exhaust so I can hear all these things : )

The dealer has it now and they do plan to pull the stator first, so I'll see how that goes. They pulled the stator before and tested it when I was having some charging problems, but didn't end up replacing it. They rewired the harness "upgrade" and replaced the voltage regulator, so it's been charging ok for now.

What is a "cold" exhaust leak? I've never heard the term before.

I assume that means an exhaust leak only when the bike is cold, but I could be wrong.

Update on mine: dealer is apparently replacing the motor... I don't have details yet since I just had a message when I got home. My riding season has really not been going well... : )

Yours probably had the same issue as mine, loose stator rotor nut witch starts wobbling and makes contact with the stator. I took mine in on time before everything came apart and they are replacing the rotor, stator and stator cover.

Ah, yeah I have heard of that problem mentioned here...

Apparently the cam chain was too tight, causing it to disintegrate and there was all sorts of metal in the oil. My bike was not on the recall list for the rear cam chain tensioner...

Try holding your airbox cover and the gas cap ring... Noticed mine making odd rattle around that rpm as well... Turns out the airbox cover was vibrating against the frame...

Does it make the noise in neutral or just when the bike is moving? Mine makes a noise like that when moving at really low rpms if i don't give it enough gas after i let the clutch out.

Mine only makes the noise when it's moving (I guess when the engine is under load) and at 3-3.5k rpms, so it makes it quite hard to try to listen to and figure out where it's coming from... I tried what Eece said, but it didn't make a single difference. Plus it's a brand new 2010 engine...my 2009 engine made the same noise, just not as much/loud...

It reminds me a bit of the valve chatter/injector chatter in my car. You can kinda hear it if you listen for it, but once you get up to speed, its imperceptible.

To be fair, I haven't really dug into the car to figure out what the sound is but its one of those two.

Seems to be the same with my 1125. My vote goes to top end chatter of some kind. Either injectors or valves.

Hmm.. I thought I mentioned in my post, but now I can't see it.. the dealer is replacing the motor under warranty. Gonna be a couple weeks for that though. Hopefully it's faster to get a crate motor than a stator : )

They found all sorts of metal in my oil, saying the cam chain was too tight, grinding it down and getting metal filings in the motor. So if you're hearing what I have described.. might wanna get that looked at!

Dktech> Yeah I know what sound you mean, I've heard that a few times.. this is not as deep as a sound, if I can describe it as such.

Yeah mine does the same thing, dealer said it is normal...although it did not do it the first week I had it. Says it is because it is a two cylinder and not a four. It is like a low clicking sound, not loud, but sort of rattling sound. I am getting frustrated cause I love the bike, but I am having trouble left and right with it.
I saw someone changed the oil, what oil did you use to get rid of sound?

If you're referring to me, I used and have used Mobil1 20W-50 for V-Twins since 1500 miles. So I didn't change the type of oil, but I noticed the sound had gone away when I did an oil change. I really didn't do anything different than the other two oil changes I did (initial at 620, second at 1500 to full-synthetic). I did realize I put about 2.5 qts in and no more.

Could the sound have anything to do with the oil level? Maybe overfilling a bit -- as in not enough to throw it all over the inside of the air box -- causes something to be noisy? I dunno' ... far fetched, but coincidence or not it stopped when I did my oil change at 6000 miles. I'm at around 7500 miles now and the sounds is still no where to be found. It's really nice not hearing that clanking sound especially during warm up.
