The low fuel sensor is temperature sensitive. The way it works is gasoline cools the sensor, and after the level of gas gets low enough, the gas isn't cooling the sensor anymore and it triggers the light. If you are near empty you can get false low fuel readings that will correct themselves after you start to go. Then you will soon get the gas light for real and it will stay on. Also when you are near the trigger level while riding, you may see it go on and off a few times till the gas level drops below the point that it keeps splashing onto the sensor.

There is an issue with some bikes when being started in cold temperatures, it will show the low fuel light and check engine light along with a error code. This is due to a error in the instrument cluster and it needs to be replaced.

Your bike isn't saying you have .1 gallons left, it said you drove .1 miles since the light came on. Otherwise I have 38 gallons left.

Mine comes on a lot when first starting my bike for the day even if I just filled up the tank the day before. I never get the check engine light. I just ignore it, it usually goes away 1 or 2 min into the ride. When it comes on and actually starts counting mileage, I know mine is actually low. I generally just keep track of how much gas I've used anyway.
