I thought I'd post up pictures of my air box modification. This is radical compared to what others have done, but I like it, and have had fun making it work. It almost doubles the size of the original air inlet.
Some may like it and others won't, but that's ok.
I used a mini air scoop I found on ebay. It's for a 4 brl. type carb. Most of the ones listed are too long at 13 inches. This one is only 10 inches long, so I knew it would work. Yeah it adds aprox 5 lbs to the bike. But it's a street bike, not a race bike. With my Barker's exhaust, it still weighs less than a stocker though.
Although I haven't done it yet, I plan on blocking off the original air inlet under the steering neck, and moving the air sensor to the air scoop. As far as I know, blocking off the lower air intake has not been discussed, or tried yet. It will eliminate all that hot air comming into the intake from the radiators. Cooler air should produce more hp and torque, along with a richer mixture. So, let me know what you think. Just be kind, if you hate it.

Ain't something I would do to mine, but that sure does earn points for creativity!

Also a flat surface to strap a 12 pack to.

Yeah, not a fan of that mod but you definitely did a professional looking job of it. Is there really much air pressure there behind the cluster and fairing? Also having air drawn through two air filters in series must be some-what restrictive no?

So, now your bike is running even leaner than before. Or, have you upgraded the ECM? I understand you're going to eventually block off the other inlets.

Too bad you didn't dyno it before. I think you're going to find you won't have any gains.

Oh, and I hate it. : )

i like how well you did the install, it looks clean, but i'm not sure if it will help much on the performance side, and i'm not a fan of the look. I just think it is to big, that looks like a ram air piece for a small block chevy engine.

Definitely a professional installation and a job well done. The beauty of this sport is "to each his own". A quality job but I'm not a fan of the look either. As a matter of fact it made me have "flashbacks" of the old breadbox air cleaner days!

What might look better are side scoop intakes kinda like are mimicked on the old VMax.

That just plain doesn't work aesthetically speaking.

Good effort though.

Double air filter, that would negate all benefits of the cold air you think you are getting up there...

It's 105 degrees outside today, so I only rode it a couple of miles. I haven't installed my Barker's exhaust yet, but with the stock pipe and Race ECM, it runs even smoother than before.

I'm going to remove the filter in the scoop, and then try it, since that was my plan all along.

When I nail it, it sounds like my old Holley carbed "73 Mach 1 Mustang, with a 351 Cobra Jet engine. But it's quiet until I hit 6000 rpm. Then the quad sound kicks in. For what it's worth, my SOTP impression tells me it picked up a little more power. I expect it to be better with just one filter.

I'm just having fun messing with it. If I get tired with it, I can change it back. I ordered a spare inner and outer cover.

You did a nice job with the install, but it would have to add a lot of horsepower to offset the aesthetic degradation!

To answer Ratsmc,

There is plenty of room to fill the "gas tank". I did it yesterday during the maiden test run.

Define "a lot of horse power" 3,5,8....? I will be happy with 3 or more. It's not a super charger.

Not with the tall handlebar kit. It's not really intrusive. My small tank bag was much more intrusive than this air scoop.

Good craftsmanship!!

It could also serve as a map holder, arm rest, chin rest and a table for lunch.

Can you really see anything behind you with those mirrors?

There appears to be two air box covers, one with letters and one without.

You should have gotten a black CR, they came from the factory with 3 extra HP.

The way I tuck in for corners etc. that would wear my chin out. I ride rain or shine. That looks like may be no good if you get caught out in rain storm.

Wonderful installation! The attention to detail is awesome. However; this is where I draw the line on function vs form. I think the next step is for someone to mold a custom airbox that grants a little more height to allow for some better air flow.

It's not my cup of tea, but if you like it, then it's great. Either way, thanks for taking the time to share it with us.
