This is just something I started thinking about today: riding down to OC, MD the traffic was horrible (took 5 hours when it should have taken 3-3.5) and as such my battery light came on a lot while in stop-n- go mode with the fans on full blast. Even when stopping at stop lights on the main strip my voltage would drop to 11.8-11.9 V. I'd really prefer having the security system on while I'm down here, even tho I'm in a good part of town. Do u guys think having the security system on for two days would drain the battery too much to the point that it won't start? I mean really it's only the LED on the IC, right? That shouldn't draw anything at all ... Just a thought. BTW, the charging system would work great under way (13.5-14.4 V), just not when stopped so I think I got a good amount of charge retained. Voltage reads 12.2 with the bike off right now.

you should be fine as long as it's not an '08 with the original IC

sometimes the early IC's can sap the battery if you use the anti-theft mode. maybe sometimes even without anti-theft mode. happened on mine. warrantied to a newer IC.

from what I have read it sounds like i would rather have my 08 with a original cluster rather than a 09 or 2010 with the charging harness "up grade" personally I like my stator

Thanks for the responses guys. I believe I need a new stator though even though the geniuses at my H-D/Buell dealership checked my charging system under my inquiry. Stator WILL not charge battery at idle (sitting at a light or in traffic). Battery voltage goes down to 11.6 V until I sit there and rev the engine like a squid. it ... Can't things just ... Work?

Anybody have an idea of how long the stators are on backorder?

do you have the charging harness installed on the bike, if so, then the dealer probably messed up the installation of the charging harness.

My stock 08 with the original cluster sat for about 2 months in security mode without a tender, and still had enough voltage to start. Batt light was on, sys voltage error due to being near dead, but it worked and charged back up during low RPM riding.

My point is, you will be fine with the security system (especially with a batt tender). Your stator on the other hand, I can't vouch for.

I have an '08 with an '09 cluster. I never had issues with the security system running down the battery. I was having issues with my battery that appear to be due to the addition of my radar detector. I know the load can't be anything to speak of, but since I stopped using it I have not had to charge my battery weekly with the exact same riding habits. When my battery got low I would give it a 8-12 amp hour charge and she be just fine.

Thanks for the help guys. I left the security on all weekend with no problems. The stator is definitely on its last leg ... obviously no batt light while riding, though my voltage never got above 13 V on the way home. Due for an oil change soon (400 miles) so I'm going to check the oil screen on the bottom of the engine to see if there's any bits floating around ... :/
