Hi all;

I've noticed that the speedometer on my 1125r (stock) will occasionally display zero while going down the road. It might last a few seconds or minutes and then the speed will reappear. Powering the bike on/off does 'reset' it and it'll work again right away. It's more of a nuisance than anything, has anyone seen this before?

On a recent 500 mile trip it did it 3 times in the first 150 miles and I didn't catch it happening again but it may have.

I'm wondering if I just have a loose connection somewhere and when jiggled just right the speed signal drops. (btw no check engine light ever appears, no codes either)

Thanks!

superdave

It will slowly get worse. Might be a loose connection, but it's probably the start of a speed sensor failure.

It's been a relatively common issue on the bikes.

I get it on my 09 R with a system voltage message. The whole cluster goes dark and it just displays that message... when i pull over and cycle it on-off-on the cluster comes back up and system voltage reads as high as 19V and then slowly comes down to ~13.8V... it doesn't happen every time but once i cycle it it doesn't come back again. I was told this will be fixed with the harness repair but i am still waiting for it to come in.

Mine only does it when it is really hot (outside and bike). Never had it happen in cool weather.

If you do a quick search, you will find some different approaches to dealing with this. The problem i have had is that the dealer won't do anything since they can't reproduce it.

Fortunately, I now have video of it and I have found that whacking the throttle when the bike is hot will almost always cause it to happen. And it has thrown a code about 11 times in a 1600 mile ride.

Search for "speedo" or "speed sensor" or "speedo error"

I had that happening and it progressively got worse. I could usually get it to kick out of he 0mph by going WOT in 6th gear for a second.

The dealership cleaned the speedo, that didn't fix it, and I JUST got the instrument cluster replaced. While I enjoy the new cluster with gear display and voltage, it registered 0mph for a little bit on my first day back on the bike. Sooooo looks like I need a new sensor then?

1 positive side affect is that while registering 0mph, your odometer doesnt collect any more miles.

to the OP it will most probably be your VSS i have had mine replaced twice now. Should be a simple warranty job. Check your error codes in diag mode.
