So I'm riding home from work tonight and I happen to look down at the display and it says system voltage. The bike was just barely warmed up and I think the fans had just come on. Now I'm thinking the stator gremlin has finally bitten me. I had no directionals or neutral light or speedo. I pulled over and shut it off with the key and restarted it. It started right up and was charging at 14v. Now I'm thinking this doesn't sound like a stator issue. I drove the rest of the way home and voltage was between 12.8 and 14.2 which is pretty much where it always is. I checked the error codes when I got home and there was only one.....comm error u0001. I did a search and it looks like it is a error on the CAN bus between the ecu and the display. The bike is pretty much stock except for an Erik Buell Racing race ecm. I installed the ecm about a month ago and have had enough start cycles to clear the codes it came with. I think I'm going to reseat all of the connectors, but if anyone has any other ideas feel free to chime in. Thanks, Paul | ||

Check to be sure battery cables are tight. | ||

The com error happens when the cluster loses the signal from the ECM, which either means the connector is loose, or a momentary drop in voltage caused the connection to terminate. Check all the connections, including battery terminals and the connector for the cluster, and hopefully it will never happen again  | ||

I bet if you would have checked the voltage immediatly upon start up ity would have been REALLY high. your voltage regulator is going. this is a bitch for harley to diagnose because upon restart everything is fine and they will have to ride for ______ miles for it to happen again. Also if you just pull over and let the bike idle for more than 10sec i bet the error goes away.... ask me how I know LOL todd | ||

Well I checked all the connections and everything seemed OK. Then I decided to start the bike and let it idle for a while and watch to see what happens. I let it idle for about 40 minutes. Voltage with high beams off never went below 13.8 and was mostly at 14. With high beams on the voltage held steady at 13.3. CT topped out at 200. I did check the voltage right after startup and it was at 14. I've been thinking about going to an aftermarket regulator and now I might. I'll keep an eye on things for the next few days and see what happens. Thanks for the input. Keep it coming. Paul | ||

This error showed immediately after my replacement stator was put in. It is the reason my CR will be going back to HD as no one can seem to fix these damn bikes. One thing I noticed is that when I would engage and disengage the clutch (while in gear) the error would appear and disappear then reappear again. Sh!t is wonky beyond my patience at this point. |
