Well after numerous dealers heard my bike and said nothing was wrong I decided to investigate the knock noise at low rpms. To my discovery it was 4/1/2 turns loose. The bike has 2700 miles and a loose stator nut.
I knew something was wrong after hearing multiple 1125s.

Also noticed was 8 of the 12 windings were darker than the others. So I'll be looking at a stator replacement soon.I thought about switching the leg that is hooked to the relay to a used leg so that way I can prolong it till end of year. Has anyone tried this?

I'm seriously frustrated
A new bike with loose internals???
In my eyes that's bad assembally. Way to go rotax!!

Not something that was $12,000 and only had 2,700 miles on it. I'll defend Buell/Erik to the end of time, but a manufacturer defect is a manufacturer defect. Even though we love 'em, Buells aren't infallible.

Wake up on the wrong side of the bed today?

I have not bashed buell. The engine is a rotax .Your childish remarks are true to your ignorance.
This is a serious issue that should be addressed. I started this post not to bash buell but to pass my experience and knowledge of the situation. So don't jump the gun keef.Anyone that has a stator issue will find this thread in the archives . Which the system search works quite well.

I was suggested by ebr to not use the stock nut and order a new one which I did as a precaution before dissassembally today.
I will post pictures later of the stator wear at 2700. I hope this info helps others that have knocking noises that are curious.
Everyone have a great 4th and ride hard.

Do Rotax assemble the motors then? I know they supply them but are they the guys that actually put them together?

Curve_carver & Jules - Thank You for this post. The knock may have been a part of my stator failure. I just picked it up with a new stator and no cold start knock.

Just used high temp retaining compound and tq it to 225 . I believe 150ft lbs was stock. Ebr sad to tq it to 300 if I could. Wow she's quieter than she was when I bought her.

The only people that see my money is ebr keef.
Mike at ebr has given outstanding customer service. Better than the dealers. Even though I'm doing wrenching. : )

Thanks, carver.

BIG hardware internal to the engine shaking itself loose - or just never getting properly tightened to begin with - is NOT OK.

What's a stator nut? Stator is held by three bolts.

One of Higbee's race techs at the track ask me if I had checked mine yet (stator bolts). I had not. He said I should as they are known to come loose, especially under race conditions.

I assumed he meant the ROTOR bolt on the end of the crank from the very high torque values...and the use of the term "nut". Three stator bolts into the outer case cover (not those), one rotor nut onto the crank end (that one). Is that right?

It's the 32 mm nut in the rotor on the end of the crank. You would need a deepwell 32 mm socket to perform this job.I did reuse the gasket. It was very easy to Check.

I rode it today and wow it's so quiet.
I'm going to post up some pictures from the book soon.

The service manual states that a crankshaft locking tool (part no B-48858) is needed to loosen and tighten the nut. Who has one? Who sells them? How much?

A towel can do it in a pinch, but its a big bother. Just get an aluminum plate and cut to fit. I use an old piece of aluminum U channel stock I smashed flat, works fine.

Curve_carver - I had the exact same loose stator nut issue. Michael at Erik Buell Racing diagnosed the problem immediately when I picked up their ECM. I couldn't be more happy with the service & advice Erik Buell Racing has been able to provide. It was very loud but now torqued to 300 really did quiet the engine noise down. What a difference! I was able to get it covered at dealer under warranty if anyone was wondering.

Was the rotor slapping something or was it more of a harmonic? Pictures?

I've got a metallic ticking from the left side of my engine on startup until the oil pressure light goes out. Is this what a loose rotor nut sounds like?

Also, does anyone know if the 12k mile service involves pulling the stator cover? I'm coming up on that fairly quickly (next month and a half or so).

It was kind of mechanical sounding if that makes sense. It was very noticable while it idled & didnt go away. The sound could be heard most distinct from the right side

I always thought my bike sounded kind of clanky like something isn't getting enough oil. I hear it most over the top of the engine, but it doens't sound like valves or anything and the bike runs great. Are these bikes just naturally "mechanical" sounding, or is it possible I have a loose stator nut?

It almost reminds me of a crappy bike I used to have the starter gear would drag/grind on start up, if that makes any sense. Only this isn't as loud, but the sound is the same.

What's involved with checking the stator nut? Do I just need to pull the stator cover? I haven't received my manual yet.

Paul or anyone else with loose stator nuts, did you notice any increase in vibration that was lessened/ eliminated after tightening the nut?

Thx

Mine won't go that high. I needed to borrow one that went to 250 lb-ft when I worked on my Tubers.

Guess I'll hunt down a 32mm deepwell socket and big torque wrench this weekend and check mine.
