I've got about 15K on my bike now and the front brake feels weird. It's a bit grabby, no longer linear, and I was wondering if there is some sort of time line for the life of a front rotor. I've got new factory pads and the rotor appears to be fine...just the usual hard spots.

Is the wave rotor from Braking a good choice? I saw one on eBay from a Buell dealer for $339...is that about right?

Don't forget the mounting kit though.

$166 + shipping for the rotor and the kit. Kinda tough to beat that since it's the thicker race rotor.

Mountainstorm - When was the last time you serviced your forks?

Did you bleed the brake lines when you put on new pads? I would replace the fluid and bleed the system.

do you notice black/dark spots on your rotor?
or do you hold your front brake at stop lights?

try scuffing your rotor with some sandpaper and sparing amounts of brake cleaner to remove the deposits.
and then start using that pedal-thingy under your right toe. it's not just an extra switch for your tail lights, ya know

If you are getting 15k out of a set of pads, I'm highly suspicious of any need to replace the rotor.

I've never worn a rotor below spec, even after tens of track days and abusive use. Instead, what I find is the drive bushings tend to get a little sideways on me and wear out the bearing edge on the rotors to the point I just want them replaced.

So, keep an eye on those first. If you see them at a bit of an angle, it's probably time to replace them and the rotor.

I get less than 1,000 miles out of a set of brake pads, and I don't wear out rotors.

I didn't get 15K from a set of pads. I probably get about 5-7K out of front set of pads. The dealer has never serviced the forks as far as I know. The E B R rotors are a great deal. Not sure if I need thicker ones.

When I last changed the front pads I did not drain and rebleed the brake lines. I was not aware that brake fluid went bad (as long as no moisture gets in it).

I will probably remove the rotor, sand it, and replace the mounting HW before replacing the whole rotor. Just wondered if anyone had tried the Wave rotor and if it seemed better than stock. I put one on the X1 and it really improved the feel and stopping power.

Mountainstorm - If the fork oil is gone the grabbiness may just be the forks collapsing and because it seems that nothing is happening you increase pressure. The suspension travel stops and by now you just overbraked a bit? This has happened to me many times over the years with my S1.

Mountain -

Moisture begins entering the system as soon as you close up the reservoir.
It enters thru the lines themselves and thru the heating and cooling of the system...or the act of braking...otherwise known as condensation.

When you see the fluid turning brown....change it.

Soak up the current brown stuff (remove from reservoir) with paper towels, fill the reservoir with fresh fluid. Bleed until the fluid coming thru the tube is nice and clear.
Replace res. cover.

I normally do the brakes twice a year and a hyd. clutch three or four times a year.

If you are good on the brakes, I can't recommend the wave rotor. It's going to reduce braking power because there's imply less contact area.

The 6mm rotor is better than OEM but heavy. The 5mm finned is the way to go for performance. I've not worn one out yet using the new mounting hardware, and the new hardware is amazing at getting the heat out of the braking system.

Also, flush your brake system with Motul RBF600 fluid. Good stuff, doesn't fade.

Thanks for the sage advice guys.

Just to clarify: no issue with the suspension. The brakes are grabby, not the forks diving or whatever.

I think I'll pull the rotor and surface it and replace it using the new Erik Buell Racing mounting HW and I'll refresh the fluid. I'll let you know how that improves the braking feel.
