Bob,
The stator problems are more consistent with a bad design, rather than a bad batch. If newer stators are built to a different spec, a new part number would be issued by HD. It would be fantastic if HD would step up and design a new one, as of now I am not aware of a new part number.

Tpoppa, I've been a tech for 15 years, they do not always post their changes.
Court, where did your post go?

What had Court posted? He generally has useful insight on issues like this.

My bike is dead at the dealer. They can't diagnose what is going wrong. They are on day 8. The NJ Lemon Law provides them 20 days to fix it.

If they are coming in with old dates on them, maybe they are being rewound......might be a good idea with all the failures out there!

HD will do a good job. Years ago they stood behind my S1 for so many warranty and not-so-warranty things. I have no reason to think that things will be any different now.

Does anyone know if Buell/HD is agreeing with the reported stator cover issues (inadequate clearance for oil movement around the stator wiring) and grinding down the inside cover in this area like two others on this post have pictured? Or is this just their personal opinion and remedy?

If the factory is only replacing stator and other failed parts if applicable (including wire harness update), is this or has this proven to be effective?

I sure don't want to ended up stranded on the roadside a second time! Any feedback on the success or lack of?

Well both of my stators should be in next week. We will see how they work.

So if most failed stators are showing that the stator winding's insulation is the most deteriorated adjacent to the three holes in the stator and when the stator is mounted, the three holes are at 12 o'clock, is it reasonable to assume that a slightly low oil condition would expose this area and hence encourage it to overheat?

Are others noticing that the failed stators are melting their winding insulation at 12 o'clock?

So would "over-filling" the oil fix that? I am not sure since it is dry sump.

Pwillikers - Interesting assertion, that may be another reason to have an oil jet up there.

Danny,
How would you add an oil jet up there?

and why do the 08's have no issues? I don't know I think the stator is crap cut and dry better windings and insolation will fix the problem

Well I made it back to NY on Sunday. Had to run thru NYC on the way home. Sat in traffic for a while. The voltage went down to 12.0 and temps in the 210 range. No battery light on the ride home. Rode to work this morning. Temps got up to 205 range. Voltage down to 11.8 - 12.2. Battery light came on at least 4 times in thew last 2 miles of a 20 mile ride. The last 4 miles was in stop and go traffic. Not sure I will get the bike started later for the way home. We will see.

was told today that the problem with mine is the voltage regulator.

anyone else have one of these go out? or just stators?

I've seen a few reports of VR failures, but nothing out of the ordinary for any bike.

well i finally got the news from the shop about my volts being whacked out when theres any load on it. they said that its normal...at this point i dont care anymore, when my stator goes im gonna pull it out myself and send it in to get rewound. now only time will tell.

Count me in as someone starting to experience an issue with the electrical system.

I'm starting to see the battery symbol on startup. I guess I'll see what happens.

Well I made it home yesterday after work. It started out at 13.9-14.1 when I first started it. Once I got going and the bike temp went up the Volts dropped down to the 12.0-12.7 range. No battery lights on the way home. Rode to work today and had the battery light come on 5 times same as yesterday. lowest volts today was 11.8. I did not put it on the charger since Last Friday when I got it back from the dealer in Pa. We will see how long this goes on until I get stuck. Upgraded my hog roadside service to the most coverage since the standard service only covers one tow per year and I used that last week. I think they are going to lose money on that upgrade.

Frank,
Not a problem. Not you fault. Knew this was a possible problem when we made the deal. Same thing is happening with my CR. I do love the bike. I must say I like it better than the CR. I have about 2500 miles on it so far. How many miles where on it when you brought it out to Wi last week? I forgot to check.

Less than 700.

I am glad you like it. It is a lot of fun to ride for sure.

Has anybody sent a dead stator off for rewinding yet??? just curious....too bad the charging system is not a brushless excited field type...it would be a lot more reliable...and voltage would be controlled, not shunted to ground...

I like the simplicity of the shunt regulator and fixed field stator, just gotta get the engineering right.

Same system every Japanese bike I have owned used. Of course I only buy old old crappy Japanese Bikes. : )

So is rewinding the final answer, or relieving the cover of some material for more oil flow also recommended?

Mine is starting to intermittently throw the battery light up at startup, when the time comes I plan on doing the rewind with the high temp coating and the side cover grinding modification for better oil flow.

I don't think oil flow is an issue but it couldn't hurt.
