09 CR.

Since I immediately changed to the upright bars, I didn’t see any need to send the bike to a Harley shop…ever.

The bike is running great. Volts pegged at 14.
The solenoid is still installed, just disconnected from the linkage and rolled back out of the way.

Should I even bother?
The only reason I am considering it is I heard the recall could involve a reflash which also improves low rpm operations. Most of my riding is above 5K rpm.

Either do the upgrade (and get the latest flash which is better than its predecessors) ... Or plan to replace the stator before long from what I've read. My bike has been perfect since the upgrade, both with the OEM #142 (R version) and the E B R race ECM.

My bikes didn't break UNTIL the upgrade.

It seems the problems are all over the place.

Is it bad stators, bad regulators, harness installation, harness design.

Different problems for different people.

I regret having it done only because I wasn't having any issues.

Mine didn't fail till after it also, but it doesn't mean the thing wasn't going to blow up soon anyway.

The problems on my CR and R were not any of the above. The only thing the two dealers changed on both bikes were the relay that is on the harness fix. I am still having problems on the R. Not sure about the CR since I have not ridden it in 2 weeks and the kickstand spring is gone. Cannot get the kickstand parts until Aug sometime.

Mike, call/email Erik Buell Racing or just order it direct. $25 for the whole thing.

Froggy I'm not blaming the harness.... yet. Could have been installation. One bike had 15k, one had 4k, both done one right after the other. They failed one right after the other about 3k-ish miles later on each. Just weird.

add another to the regulator failing right after the recall harness.
4k the ic goes completely blank except for displaying electrical failure.
doesn't store codes.
Good thing i took a video with my iphone the dealer can not reproduce.
Still waiting for the dealer to confirm my diagnoses.
But when the cluster does come back on it is over 17 Volts.
I really don't want the battery to explode under my seat.

This old saying comes to mind "if it ain't broke don't fix it"
You might as well enjoy the ride, especially if the bike runs as well as you say and without charging issues.

By the looks of the current postings regarding stator failures, you do not have much worse than a 50% chance that the stator will die.
If it is going to die, it looks like it will happen with or without the upgrade.

Thanks all for the inputs!
I'm keeping an eye on the voltage.

I'm leaning towards "If it ain't broke don't fix it."

I took the case cover off of my CR last weekend.

While 2/3's of the stator is dark, there is no crispyness (burn) to any of the insulation.

I did as one other person did (I think here..) lowered the internal ribs to about half of what they were, rounded the sharp edges and polished the ribs. This way no amount of rubbing will wear thru the insulating tube (the orange tube).
I won't be using any great globs of silicone to glue the stator harness to the interior of the cover. Just let the oil flow....

I did...order a "spare" stator though...just in case.

My CR's got 11,8xx miles (noted exactly on another post) on is and still charging fine as is....no harness..."upgrade (?)".

My bike charges correctly after the upgrade, but the dealer seems to scratch, break, or put something together wrong each time he gets his hands on my bike, so I can relate...

Anything unusual in removing the cover? Seems I read something about a bit of extra effort to do with the magnetic pull? Or did I dream that?

Dean,
Got one from Erik Buell Racing last week but court has it at his house. Just ordered two more to put on the shelf in the garage.

Did anyone get the recall letter only to find out after taking it in the upgraded harness was already on the bike?

I bought the bike brand new and this is exactly what happened to me.

I thought you wouldn't get a letter if the bike already had the harness installed at the factory.

Maybe you already have the upgraded harness????

Unless you have a 2010, it wasn't installed at the factory. Even some 2010's didn't have it.

They never sent me a letter. I just asked the dealer if my serial number was eligible for the updated harness, and it was. Gotter done. Working fine but always did.

Froggy, it's starting to make sense now. I bought my '09 CR at a dealer in Ga. back in Nov. I guess they did the upgrade before I took delivery without me knowing about it. I took the bike to my local dealer here in Al. for the upgrade this past Friday and that's when I found out it had already been done. It never crossed my mind that the dealer in Ga. would do this before the sale...

I would still look under the seat and see if the thing is there, takes 20 seconds to check and removes all doubt.

I know for sure that it's there. There were two CRs having the recall done when I was there. Mine had it and the other didn't...

I'm not finding and such recall in the NHTSA database . . what is the campaign number?

The ONLY recalls for 1125R are

  • 140 of the 2009 units for cooling
  • 1579 2008 units for the clutch
  • 140 2008 units for cooling (sounds like the 2009 campaign was a duplicate)
  • 3316 2008 units for brakes

There are no recalls on any of the 2010 1125 models.

EB Racing have whole sidestand assemblies for sale at about the same price as the spring replacement. They have them on the Used and takeoff parts tab

Froggy

What is the thing I am looking for?

There is an out of place connector with two bolt holes but only one bolted. It is up near the intake cover.

I got a new flash in Feb which fixed a stall problem. That one has the harness upgrade in it for sure. I'm hoping the wiring has been done.

A friend got the recall done on his 09 this week and the charging stuffed up on him - left him stranded. I'd rather not face the same dilemma

I guess that's why I never had problems....
I ride my bikes above 5k most of the time....

Does anyone know how deep into the factory harness this harness install goes? I don't have mine to look at.
