this was brought up on "old school"...I think it is a really interesting subject. The price for the Erik Buell Racing battery is not outrageous but for someone with a little experience with a soldering iron and circuit knowledge could seemingly build one for a lot less. Not that it would be overly advantageous for a street motorcycle but its still a cool idea.

I think you are comparing apples to oranges.

I have looked into building LiIon chargers, and its a fairly daunting engineering task to do it right, and off the shelf technology to do it right isn't cheap either. At least $50 for a bad one, more for a good one.

I don't know how the people just slapping the LiIon batteries in place of the lead acid unit are managing not to bake the LiIons by over charging. They are probably not using much of the capacity of the LiIon in terms of how quickly it can be charged, and shortening the lifespan of the battery by charging when the battery is full, but they are "good enough".

From what I have heard about the Erik Buell Racing battery, it is a very sophisticated charging and load balancing setup. Not cheap for sure, but not simple either.

The EeeBeeRrr battery has a circuit board in it to keep it in check.
