Had a bad clunk when braking hard, and a click when turning the bars to lock in either direction.

Talked to my Excellent dealer, CC Harley Davidson, and the resident Buell guy, Skyler, said they didn't know, but thought it was the steering head bearings. They happened to have a set in stock, and poof, no more clicking/clunking.

FWIW, that noise is NOT normal. Probably not something that would cause a catastrophic failure, but after all, that is more or less what's holding the front wheel on the bike....

I want that stuff as solid as possible under my generously proportioned posterior.

Anyhow, that's the fix. And it was warrantied.

Yeah, if you're getting a noise by turning the bars then I'd have the neck bearings checked out. Good move on that.

The forks on these things do make a little noise and a lot of folks confuse that for neck bearings, but they don't make noise if you're turing the bars when it's just the forks.

I had the same clunk on my CR. At first it was only noticeable under hard breaking but progressed into even mild breaking and as Carbon said, even into something so bad it clicks when the bars are turned. Bearings were replaced under warranty when they did the wiring harness swap.
