The closest dealership, Mancuso H-D, in Houston wants to charge me 42 bucks just to update my flash.

Does anyone else have the same experience? I thought this job would take about 5 minutes and be on the house!

The one nearest me said they would cover it as a warranty issue if there was something wrong with the bike, bu I would have to pay the labor otherwise.

I bought my CR from Mancuso but I use Independence HD in College Station for service. They flashed me and repaired Mancuso's harness work at no charge to me. Service manager and tech are Buell owners and aficionados.

Do you have to do the harness update? That should require the latest flash.

Do 08 1125Rs don't need the harness update? I thought that was 2009s

She's no longer in warranty though, wonder if that would still work.

Ask them why they are charging when other dealers do it for free. I consider a flash as a recall.

Flash is an update directly from Harley and the dealer should not be charging for the procedure. The dealer can get reimbursed from Harley corporate. If they refuse call Harley and complain what dealer is trying to charge for labor or otherwise.

If you think $42 is expensive, I got charged $80 at the closest dealer. I went in for the flash and when the bike was done, they said "that'll be $80 please".. I argued with them about it being warranty but they claimed it was not. Then I called back and spoke to the service manager (who apparently was not there when I had the flash performed) and he said he would see if Harley would warranty it. I called back a week later and was told that Harley would warranty it, but that they were only reimbursed $14. He said that he would call back in a day or two once they figured out how to handle the bill.

It sounds to me like Harley thinks installing a flash on an 1125R is only worth $14, and given that it probably takes about 5 minutes to do, that sounds reasonable. Dealers, on the other hand, want to make a minimum amount per vehicle service, and taking in a bike to get paid $14 for working on it is not what many of them want to do.

Anyway, I'm still waiting to hear back from the dealership. Hopefully this will get resolved favorably, but worst case I may call my credit card and dispute the charges, and then just go to another dealership. (The second closest dealer is close to two hours away but they've gotten a good review as far as I've seen here.)

In my opinion, if they want to charge the equivalent of a half-hour of labor for the flash, I'm okay with that. Assuming $80 an hour, if they got paid $14 from Harley, that would be $26 I'd pay. But being charged an hour of labor for 5 minutes of work feels like getting screwed over.

I just called Harley, and apparently flash updates are FREE!

I'm not sure what this dealership is up to, but charging me for something I'm entitled to is pretty ridiculous.

From what I've been told, the flash update itself is free but the labor to install it isn't necessarily free. That seems rather counter intuitive, admittedly.

You guys are wasting your time with the factory flash. It will never be as good as the Erik Buell Racing ECM. It's the best $ I EVER spent on a bike (40 years riding and currently 20 bikes, over 150 in my life, including my race bikes)

Good news--I just called the Buell dealer that did my flash and charged $80 for it, and they're crediting me the entire amount--sort of. They're sending me a gift card as opposed to an outright refund. I'd kind of expected to have to pay *something* for the flash since Harley was only crediting the dealer $14 for doing the flash--I figured it would be fair to pay an additional $20 or $30 so they got the equivalent of a half hour of shop labor for doing the flash. (Can't blame them if they don't want to work on a bike for just $14, and a half hour of billed time for the work doesn't sound unreasonable.) So getting a gift card for the entire amount is cool with me. Admittedly, I'll probably just sell it on Craigslist, though, since I can't think of anything I'd need from the dealership. (I've already got oil and filters, and I do my own work so I wouldn't use it towards the 6200 mile service.) Well, now that I think about it, if they sell K&N filters, maybe I'll buy one from them. Or I guess I could see what kind of prices they have on tires as I'm sure I'll need a set at some point.

Anyway, this counts as the dealer being a stand-up kind of place and doing the right thing in my book, so consider me happy. I'll go back there the next time I need my 1125R worked on. For anyone who is interested, the dealer is Dales HD, in Mt. Vernon, IL. www.dales-hd.com.

Yeah the flash is a free update but most dealerships will charge to do it(labor wise). If your doing some other work; service, warranty, whatever I would say the dealerships should do it for free. They can do other work while the flash is downloading. But to do the flash by itself on these bikes takes about 15-20mins, not 5 like any Harley. So for them to do spend 20mins on it and than give it all away for free, there losing quite a bit depending on how much that tech makes.

Mine did the charging harness upgrade and never bothered even checking the flash...then when i called them they wanted to charge me a Hour labor on the flash...long story short i will no longer deal with them for anything if i can help it...i will drive a hour and a half down to Bumpus Buell from now on.
