In preparing for the first poker run of the season last week, it quickly became apparent that my magnetic tank bag was not going to work on my 1125R. So...off to the local Hobby Lobby I went, in order to purchase several packs (6 in a pack) of high strength magnets and a tube of quality multi-surface adhesive. The magnets are only about the size of a dime and about 1/8" thick, but they really pull. I then removed my air-box cover and used duct tape to temporarily secure my tank bag to the cover in the position I wanted it. Finally, I simply turned the cover over and dropped the magnets into place. Believe me...they tend to go right where the pull is the greatest from the bag's magnets. I used a marker to draw a circle around each one so I knew where to apply the glue and then glued them in place. The cover fits perfectly back on the bike, so I assume there's a big enough gap between it and the inner air-box housing. Except for a really strong side-wind that occasionally materialized on the ride, the bag stayed put all day! Thanks to my buddy Tom for the tip on where to buy the magnets. Any craft/hobby store should have them.

Very good thinking.

Being a ratbiker, I just riveted a couple pieces of steel in there. Your solution certainly looks cleaner.

Excellent

I was thinking of using this:

I'm going to drive in front of you and dump a box of washers out!

I was actually talking about this with a friend a couple weeks ago. He was a smart ass and told me it wouldn't work for me because my left arm and right leg would end up stuck to the cover. This would make it impossible for me to ride. All I could do was laugh....

Sew some washers to your pants and you can relax you legs on long rides.

You need to cover your vital parts with Aluminum foil to keep things from going wrong "down there".

Jules, I also thought about the sheeting, but was afraid it wouldn't be strong enough to pull through the plastic. As it is, I needed to get the strongest magnets they sold (rated a "10" out of 10 on the little chart they have on the back of each package). Ccryder...according to my last girlfriend, she already suspected things were "wrong down there" way before the magnets!

I find it too awkward to do on the 1125's, but on my XB I would lock the throttle, throw my legs up over the frame pucks then lean back and enjoy the auto pilot.

I've got a bum knee. Lady told me to put magnets in the knee bandage. I can get dual purpose magnets!

Do you know which polarity you bought? I can imagine buying the wrong ones and repelling the tank bag across the garage

Wouldn't you just flip them to get the opposite pole from the bag's mags and glue them on accordingly?

make sure you do not put your wallet in the tank bag and destroy all your bank/credit cards

Yes that's true but I was looking at some self-adhesive ones that the "glue" is already on (to save a bit of time/effort). If it's on the wrong side they won't work.

Guess I'll just stop being a lazy-ass and buy some glue LOL

Jules...the ones I bought were metal on both sides (no self-adhesive on them). Actually...if you tape or otherwise temporarily secure your tank bag to the cover when you're gluing the magnets into place, they will immediately "flip" to the correct side when you get them remotely close to where you're gluing them. The ones I bought had a little "strength chart" on the back of the package. They came in all different strengths; I got the "10" magnets (on a scale of 1 to 10).

here's an old pic of froggy's set up:
http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/290431/635096.html?1306673863

I built him some "Fairing Buddies" for the 1125r...I use mine to mount my Radar Det.

fariring buddie1

fairing buddie2

PM me if your interested...but note for a camera... the fairing mount will be picking up a lot of vibration due to the length of the "lever" arm ( the mount uses "Ram Ball" mounts and accessories)...and the wind coming over the wind screen...may produce a shaky picture.
