So, been changing oil and wrenching on all my 4 & 2 wheeled vehicles for 40 years. I want it "done right" you know! Doing the 620 mile service on the CR, finishing up and installing oil filter cover. Checked the torque spec (twice) and bringing home the cover bolts, when, SNAP! The bolt twisted off in the block. After getting over the "I'm gonna puke now" feeling, I removed the cover and, low & behold, the bolt had stretched and broke with about 1/8" sticking out of the block! Bolt came right out and no stripped threads. Thank you to Erik &/or the engineers at Rotax for properly designing these "stupid-proof" engines. I mis-read the torque spec - it's 11 N/m NOT 11 ft/lb. Now to find a dealer that can get me 2 new bolts before the end of riding season! Stupid-stupid-stupid!! Thanks for letting this old man vent over his own stupidity.

That's still 8 foot lbs. I wouldn't expect it to break with 3 more foot lbs.

You cant go to a nut and bolt place and have it replaced? We have a big one close to my house in Bargersville, Indiana. If you tell me how long and what type of thread it is I'll look to see if they have one!

You did get lucky! Go to the hardware store and get a m6 x 30mm long allen head or torque head to do the same thing.

Or try an Aprilia shop - the filter cover looks the same as the later one fitted to the Mille - some dealers keep them in stock as it's an upgrade for the earlier models so they can use the longer filter - take a look -

Those bolts they use in the oil filter cover are really soft metal for some reason. I can feel them stretch a little bit every time I pull that cover off, and thats just snugging the bolt up (not really tightning).

I notice that almost all the visible bolts on the engine are Torx, which are very, very hard to over-tighten.

I guess they made the design decision to have the bolt fail way before the threads.

how does the torx drive make them hard to over torque? the torx drive was invented to robots could screw stuff together without fasteners falling off of the drive bit. and to allow the use of a calibrated tool to consistently reproducible specs rather than cam out like on a phillips bit. because of the lack of cam out built into the drive design they are actually much easier to over torque

plus they look really cool

Boogie,
I didn't understand a word you said. I just know that I can't tighten them very tight.
They were such a PITA on my Blast, that if I needed to manipulate a Torx head bolt, I replaced it with an Allen head bolt.

in a factory situation when they are easily accessed they are easier to over torque. on the machine in our garages because of angles and whatnot the opposite may be true. whatever works for the user and doesn't break the machine is good all the way 'round
