Ok, heres the story. I was stuck in traffic due to an accident in the area..maybe 45 minutes or so at idle or a walking pace. During that time my voltage dropped steadily to a low of about 10.5. After clearing the traffic I road only about 5 minutes to my destination and when I turned it off it was approx. 11.5 volts.

After an hour I tried to leave and it wouldn't start. Turned over for a split second and then click-click-click.

I went home, 15 min away, got the jumper cables, returned, jumped it, and rode home. But something is definately wrong. I could see my voltage drop while at a red light. When I hit the driveway I let it idle and in less than 5 min. it went from 12.0 to 11.0 volts. I turned it off, waited 30 seconds, then tried to start it..no dice. Dead again.

I had the voltage system recall work done Saturday but that dealer was approx an hour away on the highway so I didn't see anything odd coming home from that.

Seems to me that something is F*(%$d up. Looks like its not charging properly, has a wicked bad draw, or both.

Does anybody have any suggestions ? I will be calling the service manager tomm. but I don't know if they messed up my wiring harness or something else just happened to go wrong.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Needless to say I'm extremely pissed off. I don't think I can ride it because it will probably go dead if I have to stop for traffic or a light.

Could be a few things (stator, voltage regulator, recall issue, etc). Mine did something similar, turned out the new wiring harness was installed improperly, which was a quick fix.
After I had the wiring harness installed correctly, I haven't had an issue.

The only thing i think you could screw up is putting the ecm pin in the wrong hole. It should be in the black #21.
The rest of the installation is pretty simple.

If your charging system was 5 minutes away from frying itself when the "upgrade" was performed, then it may have gone ahead and called it quits anyway. That is just one possibility though.

for what it's worth..my bike was running-without-a-single-hitch until the harness upgrade. It's possible it was ready to break anyway but seems pretty unlikely to me. In its current state I would probably drain the battery just sitting in regular traffic or getting gas, etc. From 12 to 11 volts in less then 5 minutes seems pretty extreme.

The charging harness product campaign is for stator overheating, not to get more charging out of the bike. Below 5k RPM the new harness probably produces less voltage than before the harness was installed.

I had nearly the same exact thing happen to me, except it happened within 30 minutes of leaving the dealership following the harness upgrade. The dealer says it's the stator which happens to be on backorder until 5/28. Needless to say, you're not the only one who is pissed.

Me too. Dealer said it was just a dead battery bike charging fine. Still have the problem but no solution

Pull the driver seat. Find the connectors with 3 yellow wires. Remove the newly installed harness from the loop. Boom. Now you are back to "no harness" condition.

Isn't there a wire that was added to a connector? I would like to remove the new harness...

Avc8130, what do you mean? I'm a bit clueless, but wouldn't that mean no charging at all?

If you remove the driver's seat you will find the harness. The harness is installed between the stator and the regulator. If you remove the harness and secure the regulator directly to the stator the bike will be just like before. The pin to the ECM does not matter, it will ground out the relay and nothing will happen.

Billp there are a few things you could try to work out the problem, you could check the connector at each end of the new harness is correctly inserted. You could remove the relay and connect the 2 yellow wires with suitable connectors and a wire.(5 and 1 on base)The modification cuts one of the 3 phases and does so by removing a ground(black wire 2 on base)under the contol from the ecu. This ground completes a circuit to energise the relay and keep all 3 phases on.
If things are normal with the 1 and 5 linked then the relay may be faulty, the ground wire to black plug pin 21 may be incorrect or there may be no positive feed to the relay( this comes from a gray wire from the active intake plug to base terminal 4.
On the other hand the stator may be Kaput !

OK here is my 2 cents
First of all and trouble shooting on the charging system is just a processes of elimination. With that it is also important to know that some of this parts (electrical) will and have in my experience go out with no reason even new ones. My first suggestion would be to start at the battery and work down to the stator and find where your losing power. check how many volts are going to the Battery if you are getting good power there the battery could be fried from the pre recall wiring.then work your way down regulator,stator... with a service manual checking voltage If you don't have one I'm sure there is someone here that does and can give you the testing procedures and the required voltage numbers. Sometimes it seems worst then it really is.

Sorry for being so long but its the tech in me

update. My dealer left me a voice mail today. They said the wiring harness upgrade was installed incorrectly. Some the wires were not connected into the plugs correctly or the splices were not good. I do not know if the new harness requires any splicing but I don't really care. As long as it works and they said that it was not installed incorrectly and that it was their fault. I can live with that.

I'll find out when I pick it up saturday morning.

Thanks for all the help. Unfortunately my skill with a voltmeter is just enough to tell if my battery is good or not so the trouble shooting info from colintornado was kinda lost on me. But I did order the electrical manual from the dealer for future problems.
