Hello. It's starting to heat up here in San Antonio and the bike is getting ridiculous hot in traffic as expected. I denoided in the garage last night and I was surprised by the gas smell and residual heat after it had been parked for about 2 hours. I usually park in a covered car port outside and never notice the fumes. When I had the air boxes off I really noticed the radiator air has basically nowhere to go. Aesthetics aside, it seems to make a lot more sense to flow radiator air outward instead of inward.

I searched for information on this and I came across two cool photos, but little in the way of information:

The Pegasus bike relocates the coolant tank to the headlight and the DSB bike runs without fans, but I could not find any other detail on either bike.

What would need to be relocated besides the coolant tank?

How would you change the radiator intakes?

How would you change the fans? (relocate, reverse mount, or polarity reverse)

It seems this modification would help with gas fumes, comfort, intake air temperature, and stator longevity. Any suggestions? Thanks. -Greg

I, too, was thinking all the same--I would think there would be a easy way to reverse the airflow outward---good research; I'm interested to hear veteran's w/their 1125r's chime in---

Why would you want/need to relocate the coolant tank?

The easiest way to reverse the fans flow is just to reverse the polarity, there were some aftermarket pods around that had openings on the outside (ugly as hell though IMHO).

I believe the concensus was that this would create more issues than it solved.

I'm not convinced it would make a significant difference to IAT and Stator longevity though..

Hildstrom, we solved the problem of overheating by reprogramming the ECM.

There are some mistakes inside that we took out and make a nice fuelmap for a specific setup.

Easyrider, thanks for the advertising, but your reflashed ECM is not going to do anything about radiator air flow or high intake air temperatures when I am sitting at a stop light in 100+ degree F heat.

Jules, the coolant tank would block airflow out of the radiator in an in->out scenario. Who made the aftermarket pods? Heat is killing stators, so lower engine temps = lower stator temps. The stator is oil cooled right?

heat is killing the stators? who said that?

What if you turned the pod upside down and switched sides?

Something like this... kinda... but this blows all the hot air all over you lol

I want to figure this same idea out and make it happen. Its my next project...

Also keep in mind some of the set-ups you are looking at are not only 'innie to outie', but also ram-air - meaning all this talk of reversing polarity, relocating fans and bottles, etc. is a bit moot. Some of these systems have no fans and won't work well for a street app.

I like Captain's idea - better check leg clearance, though.

I challenge you, i update your ecm for Free, if you dont solve the problem, you dont pay, if we solved
the problem you pay, i think if we walk through oir checklist and then update THE ecm you are Oké, your problem is, that tomorrow, i Am on ŕ holiday for 1 month (-:

Dktechguy112, The free harness "upgrade" to improve stator longevity and numerous threads say that.

I like the look of the Pegasus and DSB setups, but I think keeping the fans is essential for stop & go traffic. I would be fine with cutting a big hole in the existing pod covers if I could get it to flow and look right. Maybe fill the hole with some metal screen/mesh in black or silver. The existing intake would need to be blocked off and another intake scoop on the inside would need to be fabricated or cut out of the fan shroud. It'd be great if this could work without repositioning the radiators.

There is a reason the Barracuda and the 1190 don't use the 1125 radiator layout. Check out this pic of the Barracuda, you can make out the fan and shroud that pull air through the radiator and out the side of the bike.

This shot seems to show the coolant tank relocated to inside the right radiator. You can see it below the left headlight and above the front fender.
