My CR has had the intermittent speedo error (reading 0mph and -- on the gear indicator) since I got it.

There have been a few people here who have encountered this and gotten it fixed.

I have tried to get my dealer to fix it 3 times now with no luck. Each time the response is "we can't reproduce it".

Since attempt number two and attempt three, the IC began throwing an error message related to the speed sensor. I thought "great, now they will know what is going on". No such luck. I just got off the phone with the service guy and he said, again, we were unable to reproduce it. When I asked about the error codes he said that they saw them but couldn't determine what was wrong from them.

So, for those of you who have had this problem, how were you able to get it fixed? What do I need to do to get my service guy to track the problem down?

It is a 45 minute drive each way to the dealer so I would really like to get this fixed this time rather than continually going through the same thing.

Help?

That is exactly what I have been telling them but they insist on trying to diagnose a problem that they can't re-create.

Rat,
mine was doing the same thing. I started a month long log documenting every day each time it acted up
and at what time and what gear and at what RPM just in case the dealer said the same to me they are saying to u.
Finally I called for service and just so happend on my 45 minute ride there it threw a code.
P0503.
I gave them the log and code and they replaced the speed sensor Y0394.1AMA
No probs since.
But taken it in tomorrow for the install for the stator sub-harness, Got the letter in the mail.
C.

I just got off the phone with the service tech. They appear to understand that this is frustrating. After describing the problem and explaining that it almost always happens after about 15 minutes of riding and that it has thrown a code, he agreed to send it on a longer ride and give H-D a call to see what they can tell him.

Hopefully, we are on the right path.

Still, any suggestions would be appreciated.

My 1125r had the speed sensor replaced when I stated showing 0 mph before the bike reached 300 miles on the odo. My dealer replaced it without any questions.

Good luck.

You've got a bad IC. That is a different issue than I have.

Has a dealer looked at it? I am assuming you are still under warranty.

BTW, still no word from the dealer. I am guessing that with my guidance, the tech was able to find the problem and they realized they have to order the part I told them they would need.

Either that or they put my bike in a corner so that they could get back to installing chrome.

hahaha.. yea... well its a wrecked bike. still a clear title. the dealership hasnt seen the bike, so myabe i can squeez it in off the bike for the warranty.

the buell techs a know are pretty stubborn, you might just have to keep at em.

No updates yet. My service guy doesn't work on Mondays and no one called me Saturday. The guy I talked with today said there were no notes in my file regarding the Speedo =/

We'll see where we are tomorrow.

PIcked up the bike yesterday. The dealer insisted that they could not reproduce the problem so H-D wouldn't pay to replace anything. I told them this was sort of like going to the doctor because you are getting headaches and having the doctor ask "are you having one now?" and if you are not being told he can't do anything for you.

He tried to tell me that he believed the charging system update (recall) has fixed the problem. We'll see this afternoon when I ride home.

A side note: the wires to my front brake light switch keep coming disconnected. I tried zip tying the hell out of them but it keeps happening. I asked them to take a look at it to see if, when they put on the high bars, they had enough slack in the wires.

After they looked at it, he told me that the wires were supposed to be that loose. =|

The wires WERE COMPLETELY DISCONNECTED and the problem was that the wires were too tight, not too loose.

Christ, how hard is it to find a decent mechanic? I have never had a problem like this with my F-150, my RX-8 or even my Challenger.

Added:

Oh yeah, the serveice guy said something to me about people going on the internet and hearing some problem that someone else had and thinking that they had the same problem.

I wanted to tell him that what I found here was a hell of a lot more helpful than "there's nothing we can do" but I was loading the bike.

I realize that most people have lost interest but I am trying to chronicle my adventures in case it is of help to anyone else.

As I mentioned, I had to give up on the dealer. Despite describing exactly how to produce the error, they claimed that they were unable to. I have almost no doubt that they never did the test ride as I described.

My first ride after getting the bike back the speedo failed again.

What is annoying is that there were at least 3 error code all showing a speed sensor issue. Even without reproducing the error, this should be enough to start replacing parts under warranty. This is the exact situation I found myself in with my RX-8 and the dealer started replacing stuff until they found it.

SO, I have taken the advice of Cringbalst (who sent me a really helpful PM) and am logging everything I do on the bike (times, mileage, temperature, speeds, etc). What I have found so far is that the error seems to almost be predictable. A couple more days of this and I am pretty sure I will be able to tell you exactly when it is about to happen. Hopefully, from that I will be able to identify a correlation to a possible cause.

While I am doing that, I am trying to find a better dealer that works on Buells. The closest one to my house is owned by the same people that own Chandler Harley where I have been going.

I haven't lost interest, I've been watching this because mine has stopped working a few times. No pattern on what stops it but it always comes back on when I give the throttle a little stab.

I have this happen on occasionally on my 08
R but no error codes set. Happened when I first purchased the bike. It only happened going around right turns, then I would reach down to the right side of the ipack, grab the harness and jiggle it then it would come back to life. While installing my heated grips last fall I took the time to check the connector at the ipack and cleaned them with an electrical contact enhancer. 2000 mile later it hadn't re occurred. Until yesterday when it went out during the same conditions I noted when it first happened.

There may be a correlation to acceleration since I have never actually seen it when it goes to zero - I always see that it has already happened. It is possible that I never seen it happen because I am never looking at my speedo when I crack the throttle. can say that it doesn't happen all the time when I do open the throttle though.

Added:

Whoa, actually, I just realized that it happens every day right near where I make the only right turn on my way home. It isn't usually right at the turn but sometimes shortly after it. I'll keep an eye on this.

Rat,
Keep up the log. I did it kinda getten ready if the dealer gave BS. Write it down on paper and give 3 sheets of logs.
I know what u mean about dealing with the dealer and finding a good one. Have been taken mine to the only one around. For the
CR's 12k service going to hike it south to a different one. 3.5hrs away. Every time I took them in for service I always check out the bike before I leave and EVERY TIME have found something that needed to be addressed.

Well, in addition to keeping a log, I also managed to catch the error on video. That was actually quite a feat since the only video camera I own is on my phone and it can only record about 3 minutes of video.

I managed to catch it just as I got to a small side street. I pulled over, removed my gloves, pulled out the camera, started recording and got the bike rolling all before it the error stopped.

We'll see what the dealer says about it now.

I was lucky enough to catch my on my Iphone. Was sticking at 0. Dealer put in a new cluster which didnet fix anything. Then a week later they put in a new speed sensor which has been working well.

Good luck with that. My dealer is changing the cluster, but mines all scratched so I don't care. The thing has been back ordered for months now. Mine only acts up when the temp and rpms are just right. I'm sure I'm going to have to buy the sensor myself then the bike is out of warranty.

Does anyone know if I can still get this resolved after the warranty runs out?
