This thread is sponsored by a response I got from Erik Buell Racing about a ECM for my bike.

Part of the email referenced the catalytic converter in my 2009 CA 1125CR. I was surprised to hear about this; the owner's manual mentions that "some" bikes have cats, but for some reason I thought that was only Euro bikes. I knew about the EVAP cannister; but the 2009 service manual doesn't discuss cat converters at all. Is this a CA-only thing? Is it all years of CA bikes? I would assume the cat is in the muffler, if I replace it with a 49-state muffler and change the ECM, is there anything else that would differentiate the bike from a 49-state model (other than the EVAP)?

California requires the cat (all years). The 49 state bikes do not. The cat is a metal honeycomb looking thing at the front of the cat. It restricts flow to a certain extent. I suspect it robs some power, but no one has ever tested it. As far as I know, the only difference between the CA model and 49 state models are : fuel maps, cat and evap cap.

You meant front of the muffler, right?

The mufflers are stamped with a letter where the headers converge, just looked at mine stamped "n" for non cat, if i remember correctly It will be stamped "c" if it is a cat muffler.
