after many miles and no instrument cluster message it showed up today.

Does anyone know what this message actually means? Does anyone have the electrical manual that might be willing to share some info?

Symptom: bike is riding fine and the the cluster goes dark. no lights, no odo, tach sticks and the LCD simply displays "SYSTEM VOLTAGE". restart and it goes away. his happens when hot, cold and random RPM. All other times bike is perfect, always 13.3-14 volts. NO CODES

I started checking connections and looking for obvious stuff in the tail section. loose ground, loose connection etc, nothing yet.

The owners manual says when instrument cluster displays system voltage message:
"battery low voltage lamp lit see warning lights"

my battery light does not light up and I do not get a trouble code when I check in diag mode. After being with my local HD service center they said it was fine since they could not duplicate problem and suggested that maybe the new flash fixed it.

Obviously I should take it there when the symptoms occur. This is a major pain in the ass for obvious reasons and i would like to troubleshoot this on my own.

any help is appreciated

this is what i found in the electrical diagnostics manual, it seems like you should be getting a battery light with the system voltage message.

if it does this alot, i would try and remove your ic and drive around for a while, see if the problem goes away, if it does, then you know its ic related.

"...the cluster goes dark. no lights, no odo, tach sticks and the LCD simply displays "SYSTEM VOLTAGE"..."

Mine did this morning when I was trying to start it after sitting for 4 days and the temp. dropped below 30 degrees a couple nights. Need to charge my battery, hasn't happened before or while riding.

Needed to take mass transit into work today...kinda frustrating...

1. check the pins on the ic connector.
2. check the fuse, it sounds like you are loosing power to your ic, maybe a loose fuse?
3. check the relay that runs the ic, it could be messing up and cutting power to the ic.

1) done... pristine. all other wires and connectors pristine
2) will recheck this
3) where is this?

last night, same symptom and I was pulling over to check battery with volt meter to see if it was being charged or discharging and symptom went away! That was a first. Normally it will only go away with a restart

My system voltage message on the instrument cluster goes away when I sit at idle for more than 10 seconds. So I rigged a multimeter to my bike so I can see what the volts do when the message occurs,,,,

the volts sky rocket up to like 18-19volts! and stay there until I stop and allow bike to idle or if i restart while coasting.

does this sound like a voltage regulator?

the relays are next to the battery.

i don't think the voltage should be that high. Since your lights are still staying on, it makes me think that the relay may be bad, because there are individual relays for the different systems. If the voltage regulator was bad, and the voltage jumped that high, i would imagine that the lights and everything would cut when your voltage spikes.

i would check
1). the relay that controls the ic.
2). voltage regulator if the relay checks out fine.
