As many of you know, my brother wrecked at palomar on an 1125cr. I didn't realize it at the time, but the airbox itself had been crushed in the wreck, and because the bike rolled several times, dirt got into it. My brother took it to the harley dealer, where they started it without even looking under the airbox cover to see the smashed airbox and dirt, so all the dirt that was in there is now in the engine, i don't think it was a lot of dirt, but i am worried. It never ceases to amaze me how lazy they can be. I opened the throttle bodies and looked down, and it looked pretty good, there were a few specs of dirt on the side of the throttle bodies. The only thing i can think of is to flush the oil. Is there any easy way to check if the engine is messed up?

It's unlikely that any of the dirt got to the oil.
HOPEFULLY...it just blew out the exhaust valve.

A "leak down test" along with a "compression test" will tell you if the rings/cylinder walls, and to some extent the valve seats...were damaged.

Agreed, sounds like those guys should have their fingers broken and then turn it into Harley as a warranty problem.

Good luck.

It's probably fine.

A little bit of dirt, once, doesn't do much damage to an engine. It mostly gets pulverized by the combustion process.

Lots of dirt/grit, over a long time, will scratch the cylinder walls.

But, yes, that's rather poor quality of service...

The major thing dirt would affect would be compression. If the result of a compression and leakdown test is within spec, nothing is majorly damaged.

... if you can get a Harley dealership to do a leakdown test, let me know, as I doubt most of them even know what it is/have the tools for it. It's what a compression test should be.

thanks for the replies, maybe i can talk to the dealer and get them to the leakdown test for free since they goofed, but i don't really want them to touch the bike again, they are supposed to do the charging harness and clutch fix, but i don't want them to now. Any body know any good buell dealers in southern california, i don't mind driving a bit to get people that actually know what they are doing.

I can highly recommend Mitsu at Bartel's Harley in Marina Del Ray/Venice.
