Okay, looking at the Barker it looks sweet. How loud is it compared to the FMF pipe? Do all the after market slip-on type pipes have to "re-packed" once in awhile? Specifically, does the barkers have packing in it?

Over the weekend I heard an HMF and an FMF pipe. But both were at idle and I wasn't able to hear the thing when it was moving through the gears.

I can't seem to find any info on the HMF pipe, does it have a quiet core available too? Seems like most of the other pipes do.

Zackxb12s as brumbear asked what size core do you have installed? The 1" will loose some mid power while trying to retain the low DB level. I have found the 1 1/2 to be the best "all around" insert.

Myotherbike, the Barkers is adjustable in regards to sound by using what they cal "Quiet cores". They are currently available in three sizes 1" 1 1/2" and 1 5/8". Once you see one you'll understand how they work.

I know for sure Remus has no repacking. I think the Barker's and Keda Designs have no repacking. I have looked at both websites I dont see anywhere that repacking is required. Hr1 riot exhaust has no repacking. I think for me having a pipe with no repacking required is what I would want. Just the hastle of doing it is what I would hate.

Well anything that is packed theoretically needs repacking after a while because the material breaks down and exits the muffler through the perforated or louvered core. But I gave up on repacking my Buell Pro muffler on the X1 and had a guy weld it up with no rivets (rivets always always sheared off over time) and threw the perforated core away since it was a major source of destructive vibration.

I think it works pretty good with nothing in the muffler at all : p Maybe lacks a little torque on low end.

Freezerburn840, I agree that repacking would turn me away from a pipe. I really don't want to go through the hassle of doing it. It's disappointing, I kind of liked the look of the FMF pipe I saw.

I did a little digging and found that the HMF pipe also has the glass wool packing. Should have known, the HMF and FMF pipes are pretty similar in design.

So it looks like I am down to the Barkers. I really like the Remus, but it looks to be pretty pricey from the sites I found it on.

With that said, I will probably hold off until the Exhaust shootout is over so I can see the rankings.

The Barker will also need to be repacked at some point. A little of the packing has already worked its way out of mine--a few strips of the cloth-like packing material. I've only got maybe 500 miles on mine, so this may just be some loose material from the initial construction, though.

Any one that has the Barker with the 1" cone check the screen for strands of fiber glass. I am using the 1 1\2 now. It is not too loud IMO.

Going from a D&D to a Barker, I have yet to put my QC back in since trying it without it...It's a great mellow tone which screams when you want it to. Can't wait to get my EBR EMC back with a lower idle set...

Just watched some videos on repacking the FMF pipe. It actually isn't that bad. Then I looked at the price of the repacking material. FMF wants $59.99 for a repackaging kit. Seems high. Also, there isn't a good guide as to how often it needs to be done, their FAQ says 'Let your ears be the guide.'

The pipe would come with a 1" core if no other size was specified at the time of the order.

Tim has stated in another thread that there will be some inital packing that blows out within the first couple hundred miles. This is residual from the manufacturing process. As for the repacking itself I believe he stated it will be several years before one will need to be redone.}

Wow, that RT3 is shhhweet. I know it's loud, but the more pics Dean posts, the more I think that hearing is overrated.

Thanks for the clarification, Puzzled. Glad to hear that the small amount of packing I've seen blow out from my Barker is normal and isn't something that will continue. (I haven't noticed any more packing since removing the hangers-on a couple hundred miles ago.)

Thanks Jake, didn't realize that the Apex had rivets. That changes the ease of repacking.

Well I am glad I didnt buy FMF. I knew that repacking would be high and now recently pipes have been cracking. Jardine seems to be more reliable but repacking will have to be done as well.

For me it will come down to these in no particular order:

Barker's
Keda
Free Spirits
Remus
Torque Hammer
Drummer
HPE
Termignoni
Saron

Zackxb12s, remove the three bolts from the exhaust tip. That is where the insert sits. Since you purchased an off the shelf exhaust I'm going to say you have the 1" core. If so ditch it and pick up a 1 1/2" core.
