Is anyone doing this year's Swiss 500? I am think I am. If you are want to meet up at the event?
http://www.swiss500.ch/

Never heard of it? Well it is a HD & Buell only "ride in Switzerland over a distance of 500miles (805km) within 24 hours. After the registration and the prologue, the ride starts at an unknown location on a Saturday afternoon and ends after max. 24 hours on Sunday afternoon.
At the start and at every checkpoint you will get a road book which will guide you to the next checkpoint. The required road book from one check point to the other you will only receive once you found the next checkpoint as described in the road book.
The swiss500miles can be driven solo or in individual arranged groups.
A Swiss roadmap may come handy!"

Afhans,

I have never heard of it, but it sounds interesting. Unfortunately, it conflicts with my Isle of Man TT trip this year. Perhaps next year.

That does look interesting.. How "hot" are they on non-std exhausts, I believe the noise regulations in Switzerland can be a bit "strict".

I'll have a look in my diary and see what else is planned, I was planning on skipping the IOM TT this year : )

Fortunately, I'm done with my Paris-Dakar stuff for the year, and the TT has gotten so pase`... I'll check with my people.

ps: Please read the above with the appropriate sarcasm. I would give an appendage of appropriate value to participate in that event. I hope you have a blast!

"...and the TT has gotten so pase`..."

Passe' is defined as: "no longer fashionable, in wide use, etc.; out-of-date".

I would have to disagree. IMO, the racing is a side benefit of attending. I think the event continues to be a great place to socialize, meet people from all over, talk bikes and watch some timeless racing (with or without a pint of ale in hand). I have found that camping facilitates the camaraderie all the more.

That being said, I will admit, riding the Alps never gets old either.

Dude. It was a joke. The TT is Mecca for Motorcycles IMHO. If my left nut was particularly valuable to anyone else, it would already be gone to fund the trip.

I sent the organizers a request for current Swiss regs concerning noise levels. We'll see if they reply and if so, I will post here.

R,

My reply was meant as a joke also, hence the formal definition. Sorry. Sometimes jokes don't go over well in type. Or perhaps, I'm just not that funny type or otherwise.

500 miles in 24 hours? that way too easy.

well i guess, it is an buell AND harley ride. and the HD people need the stops to reattach parts that keep falling off.

you have no idea...it's over several high mountains-passroads and during nighttime...not easy at all!

it's kind of a parcour, you have to navigate and do the parts of the route in a specific time...

I've done it the past two years and it is a test. This is not a 500 miles ride on hiways, it's an orienteering ride. You don't know the entire route from the start, they give you a piece of roadbook and you have to follow it to the next checkpoint. You get there early, you wait, you get there after it closes your ride is over. You have to follow the route because there are an unknown number of secret checkpoints and if you dont follow the route, miss one of those, your ride is over. The whole event is really controlled speed wise and the route laid out by the organizers is meant to take between 19-20 hrs.
Dont think I'm going this year, too many other things going on and I've done three of these events in the past (1 was in Belgium). Last years events was a challenge because it rained for about 15 of the 22 hors it took us to complete the event, mostly at night!

Dont knock it until you've tried and completed this type of event.

I've never seen anyone get stopped for pipes that were too loud and there are folks that come from all over Europe to do this thing.

Well so far I like the sales pitch - it sounds great fun... I could always refit the stock pipe if I was concerned I guess...

Definately an event worth more consideration - thanks for the info.

There you have it::

Hello Jeff

Well what shall I say.

The current Swiss regulation are quite clear.
An illegal or non OEM- Exhaust system is not accepted.
That’s the law and then there is the real life.

A lot of bikes (specially HDs) in Switzerland have either there stock mufflers modified or some more or less legal aftermarket system mounted.
(Mostly not as wild as in the States)

I had modified OEMs mounted and got never checked or stopped in the last 4 years.
Occasionally you hearsay that somebody got a fine.

If you are a foreigner and have a foreign license plate on your bike the level of forgiveness is definitely much higher than riding with a Swiss license plate.

The swiss500miles are held mostly on secondary roads and the risk of a control is therefore minimized.
But there is no 100% security. No risk no fun! :-)

Just my 50 cents on that subject.
