The company was founded in 1920 in Dresden, Germany as ROTAX-WERK AG. In 1930 it was taken over by Fichtel & Sachs AG and transferred its operations to Schweinfurt, Germany. Operations were moved to Wels, Austria in 1943 and finally to Gunskirchen in 1947. In 1959, Rotax merged with the Vienna-based Lohner-Werke, a manufacturer of car and railway wagon bodies. In 1970 Lohner-Rotax was bought by Bombardier Inc. The former Bombardier Inc. branch BRP, now an independent company, uses Rotax engines in its motorcycles, personal water craft, and snowmobiles.[1]

The company constructed only two-stroke engines until 1982, when it started building four-stroke engines and aircraft engines. Other important dates include 1962, when a Rotax engine was first installed in a snowmobile and 1989, when Rotax received Type Certification for its 912 A aircraft engine.

In 2008, Rotax started manufacturing the 1125 cc Helicon liquid-cooled, four-stroke, fuel-injected 72˚ V-Twin for the Buell Motorcycle Company.

They also make motors for Ski-doo sleds, Can-Am quads, and I think they make the Aprilia RSV1000R V-twin motor.

My aprilia pegaso 650 uses a single cylinder rotax 5 valve engine, and BMW used the same with 4 valves. Head gasket failers are common, and I need to replace mine...

Bikes from the past that used Rotax that I know of were

BMW F650
ATK 600
KTM 504MXC
ALL CanAms
lots of Aprilla's

The thing I remember about any Rotax bike was they always made lots of HP. Maybe not so much the Beemer but every other bike was crazy fast. Talk to anyone that rode the CanAm 250 or 400 MX bikes, I did and they had mad power in not the best handling frames, those were some of the hang on for dear life 2-strokes of the late 70's & early 80's.
I am sure Buell picked them for the lightweight designs & big power. Not many other proven engine manufactures out there to pick from that make bike motors. Buell had a lot of input during all design phases of this motor made just for Buell. The hybrid cam chain/gear drive for the dual overhead cams is pretty cool, compact motor for it's size. The whole lower front is the integrated dry sump

The 604 single four stroke was THE motor for flat-track bikes for years.

I had one that came in my 1996 CCM C25 motocross bike. I wish I still had that one....

Outside the US, a lot of the builders I know are using Rotax 2-strokes for a lot of interesting projects.

Rotax also used to build motor for Aprilia's MotoGP 125cc bikes but that was a while back. Anyone who can compete at the world championship level knows how to build power.

Yes he could have done just that. Then the rest of us that enjoyed this posting wouldn't have seen it. Good post Buellbayly!

Using search, google, yahoo, chrome, bing, msn,etc etc etc, would eliminate 90% of what's posted on this and every forum and would make this site almost useless.

There's always someone being the net-nanny!
