It was like 10pm and we were doing maybe 95 on a straight but rather dark country road.
This is just plain wrong! At that speed you couldn't see anything until it was to late anyway. It could have been someone taking out their trash can.
I have a hard timing believing this story. You hit a big dog at 95mph and didn't go down? Ok.
What was the posted speed limit? |

I've heard stories and even seen videos of motorcycles hitting things including deer at high speeds and not wrecking. |

Yeah, my understanding (having been in Iowa) is that for deer, you're actually typically better off hitting it hard and fast than slowing down. From 45mph, you'll stop. Quickly. From 95mph, you'll probably cut clean through it. For some value of "clean" - but still upright and hopefully controllable on the other side. |

Hi Moose. Nice meeting you digitally. Think about these factors:
First off - This actually happened. Honest. I could be off on the speed by a few mph. That 750 didn't do more than 100 or so (indicated). We might've been doing 90. Or 88. Last I remembered looking at the speedo it was passing 90. We wanted to get to the motel...
Secondly - You've never ridden faster than the posted limit? It was a rural road, it was back in the 70s... I don't recall their being a posted limit but I could be wrong. Either way, the "rule" was probably 55. Please don't tell mom.
3rd- I was 21!! They don't let 21 year olds be in charge of things because... they're 21! I wouldn't do it today. Yet it wasn't a suicide attempt. I knew the road well enough and it had been a while since we saw a car driving on it. I could see the few driveways clearly, etc. As I said, the dog popped out from behind a parked (empty) car. Poof. Like bad magic.
4th - In my experience, people don't suddenly leap out from behind parked cars and try to attack the front of oncoming speeding motorcycles with garbage cans. If someone DID try this and was injured, then I'd say the world would be a better place without them.
5th - I'm not an engineer, so I can't actually do the math involved... but think about the superfast-spinning leading edge of that 3.25" front tire, being shoved through space by a 500 lb. honda on which there was 300lbs of people doing 90 mph. It's kind of like a buzzsaw... which is kind of what it was. Yes the bike bumped hard, and it scared the crap out of me (and her) but as I said, we sort of went thru the dog as opposed to over it (or around it). I think we'd have been hurt very badly or killed if I had SEEN the dog in enough time to think about swerving, as opposed to just posting up a bit on the pegs and holding it straight.
In any case, sorry to have offended you if I have in some way, but I think Buellishness and Froggy have it right. |

Strange things happen. I killed a nice 8 point deer the day before Thanksgiving on my Uly. Hit it going somewhere around 50. Me and the Uly remained shiny side up and rolling, but she (fiancee) came off the back and took a bit of a beating. There's a thread on the Uly board with pics. |

I've never done 90+mph where driveways connect to a roadway, no. Clearly you don't care about other people and I'm surprised you've lasted this long.
I'm the last person to make such statements, as I don't even like people much, but I do have some respect for their right not to be hit by speeding motorcycles. |

I'd always thought the line from Pirates of the Carribean was the best approach to speedlimits "they're more your actual guidelines than rules"
It depends on the road, the visibility, the weather and a whole host of other things.. Personally, I pretty much ignore speed limits except in 30 (or less) zones.
I once hit a block of wood at an indicated 150MPH (on the freeway) on my 'Busa and smashed both wheels (flatened the wheels not just the tires) and stayed on..there were some cars that had hit the same block of wood and received broken wheels too.. It was PURE LUCK although the witnesses were hugely impressed and so was the cop who arrived minutes later..
Personally - I'm more than happy to believe that hitting a dog at that speed would have been better for me (poor doggie!) so I think NattyX1 was both lucky and unlucky at the same time  |
