My lower right fairing's heat shield is pretty much completely detached, and there's a bulge in the fairing near the exhaust.

Going in for service tomorrow morning.

Has anyone had this dealt with recently to know what the time to get parts is on this?

Is the heat shield something that the dealership can deal with, or is this a "Wait for a new lower fairing & heat shield assembly" type repair?

IIRC one of my other friends dealt with this on his, and it was a 6-8 week delay for parts - not a big deal since it happened during winter in IA just before he put the bike away, but a rather annoying wait out here where I'm riding daily.

Also, related, should I smell "hot plastic" when the bike is idling? If I'm sitting in traffic, after 30-60 seconds of sitting I'll start smelling hot plastic - probably the fairing getting hot. This is in cold weather - 20-50F riding.

I had my right fairing replaced this month for a similar issue. It was just installed a little too close to the pipe.

Anyway, it took a little more than a month for all the parts to appear. However, you shouldn't have to leave your bike. I took mine in, they took some notes and ordered the stuff then I rode on my merry way.

If necessary, have them remove the fairings for you until the parts come in.

But did you get it for free?

Mine started to melt a little bit at the cutout but I caught it cause I started to smell plastic (hint hint).

I bent the brackets, added spacers and made my own heat shield out of fiberglass insulation for a pipe and aluminum tape. Worked out perfectly and I don't have any more probs.

(Oh, I also heat wrapped the pipes near the fairings too...these bikes are just waaay lean and run super hot.)

The heat shield provided is inadequate to the job. It is "puffy" and air blasting around it from riding will pull it into contact with the header and the aluminum foil will turn to ash.

Best fix is to space the right fairing away from the header by bending the bracket or using a spacer between the bracket and the case. 1/4" spacer is sufficient.

Instead of using the factory heat shield purchase some high temp self adhesive material and apply that over the area. Worked for me.

mine was replaced free, took about 6 weeks for the fairing replacement(right side only) though

Hm...

What did you use as that high temp adhesive material?

My heat shielding looks to have been pulled into the exhaust & burned as well.

If the dealership replaces the fairing with the same fluffy heat shielding, I'll just pull it off myself. I'd kind of like a new fairing out of it as mine is starting to distort from the heat, but if they're not going to do the work, I'll re-shield it myself.

Debating doing the header wrap though that area as well, though I've heard that header wrap can make rust issues worse down the road.

The ceramic coating sounds like a great option, but requires rotating the motor down to get the pipes off & have them coated... maybe after I get another bike running.

The dealership who sold me the bike never added the lowers to the SWR list (?) so it's appearing as aftermarket and not covered until the selling dealership adds them.

I received a call from the Parts Manager out of the blue shortly after HD axed Buell offering me a set of fairings for $199.99. He knew I was an enthusiast and they had ordered them to put on a display bike, but he thought I might want them.

That's the kind of relationship I have with my Dealer. The mechanic races an 1125r and an XB9rr and an XB12rr. I couldn't feel more confident about getting good service.

But I would not expect them to replace my side fairing if it melted. Even if they installed it in the first place I would have just done the repair and moved on.

I'm looking at this in the long term. Years from now when I need my entire engine replaced or whatever I don't want to be the guy that's been a PITA from day one. I have a 5-year ESP and look forward to riding the wheels off my 1125r...repeatedly.

So you don't consider a side fairings melting, when they came installed with the bike, to be a warranty issue?

If I installed them myself, sure. If they're part of the bike from the dealer, that sure seems like a warranty issue to me.

The stock heat shielding came loose and wasn't sticking.

This has been covered before, it is a warranty issue if they were fitted at point of sale.

Mine were, not as per the latest bulletin though so I "adjusted" them as soon as I got home, the RHS warped a little on the trip home but not enough for me to do anything about. I've just ordered a new self adhesive thermal barrier and will heatwrap the link pipe on the Barker when it arrives so I should be OK

Might pick up another set as "spares" though just in case.. I bought a "new" top fairing off eBay for £10 a few weeks back ; )

if you add a 1/4 to 3/8" spacer on the bottom brackets from the fairing attaches , this should give you the added clearance you need.

to the OP.... if your smelling hot plastic and you know you have a fairng issue, i would assume thats the problem.. you can always just put on some gloves and pull the bottom of the fairings to give you the clearnace you need. just don't pull to hard...the brackets will bend a little..

What's the service bulletin cover with the fairings?

The dealership just retaped the stock (burned through) puffy heat shield, and I see no spacers installed, so... I expect I'll have the same issues going forward.

I suppose I'll just order the needed heat shielding & fix it myself in a manner that works.

Or just pull the fairings for a while.

Have them replaced under warranty. They did mine. As long as they were factory/dealer installed you should not have an issue. The melting is due to improper instalation, when they put the new ones on they should be using the updated instalation instructions and have no more problems.

There's no spacer mentioned in the revised instructions just to bend the bottom bracket out to provide sufficient clearence..

I put a spacer in mine for a bit of additional peace of mind..

It's definitely one of the things you can do better yourself than you can hope for the dealer to do...just the way it is. Whether or not it's a warranty issue sometimes if you want it done right...you know the rest.

see if you can order two CH0040.1AM that is a spacer used on the left side of the 09 and later it is in the kit.

Ref CH00401AM I just today fitted a Fairing set. Came with instructions that says to fit the supplied quarter inch spacer to the right hand side front bracket situated near the exhaust exhaust pipe. There is a photo showing the screw and it writes that the spacer should be fitted but also states that (of course) the spacer can't be seen. I decided to add another, so there are now two between the bracket and engine casing. That meant I had to re-bend the rear bracket slightly to ensure both bracket captive clips lined up with the fairing. It was perfect and the clearance -fairing to pipe looks like it will have enough clearance to avoid melting.....lets see! FYI fairing manufactured July 09

The tape they applied held all of a day, it's flopping loose again.

I'm just going to pull the fairing, pull that off, and apply some proper heat shielding to see if it works.

Tape doesn't fix this.


They taped this damaged heat shield back into place, and it held a day.

This took 3.5 hours of my time on Fri...

The fairings are now off, I'm not going to fight with it melting until they work something out and, ideally, replace the damaged fairing. Or at least provide the spacer kit.

You can easily use washers or a piece of cut tube, you do not need to order things to make a fix. I have gone with setting the bracket half an inch (13mm) away from the crankcase.

I put the spacer at the other end of the bracket (against the fairing itself) as it's easier to install and unless you're going to use a longer crankcase bolt you'll have less threads in if you do it at the other end.

If you don't have "spacer" then you could just superglue a few washers together.
