saw a post on facebook between some Buellers about a recall due to melting. Has anyone heard of this?

I know my fairing started to melt.

However, the guys at my dealership say (and I've heard the same thing online) That it's just a tech tip...not a warranty item.

sure I have heat tape. But if it's a piss poor design, which in my opinion, it is, they should be recalled. My bike has only 300 miles and I noticed it starting to bubble. Shouldn't had to rig a new product to get it to work.

It's not a piss poor design. Whoever mounted it has piss poor mechanical aptitude. The information is out there. Use the search function.

I mounted mine before the info about melting came out and I still figured out what to do.

Obviously you need a gap between the foil and the header. Aluminum foil vaporizes well below the 1200-1400F the header pipe will reach.

For $20-$30 you can get some PSA heat shield and repair the foil or just remove the foil and put your own on the area.

Bend or space out the bracket to get the desired gap.

I've ridden thousands of miles on mine since the fairing install without issue.

my setup melted twice. once because the dealer didn't give the proper gap, the second time it was on me...

I also don't believe it to be a crappy design, i believe the owner should know that headers get hot and nothing should touch them...no matter what bike or vehicle.

Oh rocket.... i know the both times i started to even BARELY melt the plastic i could smell it? didn't you? both time mine happened with in a few miles form the house..and i could smell it right away.

everything you listed should have been in the design from day one. Again, a new product shouldn't have to be rigged to work right.

I washed my bike for the 2nd time and didnt notice the thermal tape came off. I started up and walked into the garage and when I came out there was a good amount of smoke, enough to scare me. All the backing just went to crap. It was laying on the header and toasted up. Its not a perfect setup.

I fully agree with you rocketsprink.
I notice That some here protect the bad engineering of buell sometimes even if its been proven a bad design. Some act like its okay just to say Everythings fine you just have to change this change that .Its okay.Add it all up ,It's very irritating. There is good and bad from buell designs .In this case they gave people the plastics then had a heat shield revision and now they are saying you have to keep it a 1/4inch away from the header. After all this people have burnt their plastics.I'd be pissed. That is another reason I dont jump the gun to buy buell products. On a buying standpoint for a fairing.Erik is releasing a full fairing kit soon.I'm waiting on the price. Then I'll decide which route to go.He also said that a molded lower is in the works for the fairing kit alreay out there. As long as you dont melt off your bikes first fairing you will have a chance to bolt a molded lower up.

Why i didnt I jump the gun and buy eriks stuff racing ecm and other goodies yet?
All the junk engineering thats been done the first time needs provisions. I allow them to have time to fix the screw ups .Once this is done I'll buy.In my honest opinion they shouldn't of even released the 1125r in 08.They had way to many issues that needed resolved.I believe there should of never been 08s .I notice Mountainstorm That you cant bear to watch anyone post bad info about buell and you attack them.Get over it.If it wasn't for all the bad engineering and recalls we would have nothing really to talk about.lets not scare rocketsprink away mountainstorm.I do like my r. I just wish they took more time to refine their products and designs.

It's not a bad design, it's bad installation.

The kit comes with tabs, spacers, and - wow, get this - INSTRUCTIONS. Those instructions even include pictures for the really big words.

Those who have put them on correctly have no problems. Imagine that.

Rat has a great point
Not to beat up people but I see so many jobs done without even bothering to read the instructions with all kinds of stuff.
It's one thing if you do the same thing everyday and just make a booboo it happens but buy and large people especially harley dealers don't have a clue about fairings and side pannels.
So read the instructions put it together look at it check your work and test it and I personally wouldn't let a harley dealer mod my buells at all.

considering I know many (former) Buell engineers and am planning, with others, this years Buell Homecoming, I am very pro Buell.
I'm not saying anything to put Buell in a bad light. IMHO, putting a piece of plastic that close to the header with that thin of a heat shield, is a poor design. I bought my bike with the panels already installed, and they were installed correctly.
The question was does anyone know of a recall. Not to solicit opinions.
If you want to tweak, washer and bend your mounting hardware, go the hell ahead. Point is, you shouldn't have to. And if installed AS INSTRUCTED, and there is still a melting issue, then there is a problem that needs to be addressed by Harley Davidson. Would be a shame to see a bike go up in flames while idling for warm up.

Hi,
Sorry, but I can't tell which body piece is melting from reading this thread. Is this an issue with the full fairing kit?, stock 1125r? or 1125 cr?
Thanks!

Mine has 2 melt spots. One by the clutch cover and one by the forward header. I bought it installed. Its nothing I cant live with since its minor damage but it still sucks. Hopefully I can get that straightened out along with the leaking clutch and the flash to correct whatever else pops up with the next dealer visit. Maybe I will have 1001 miles on it by then
