Hi everyone,
Just pulled the trigger on a 09 1125cr!!! I'm very excited about my new Buell.. especially after reading all the reviews and forums on it.

This is an 'ironic' purchase as well... 10 years ago, I bought a new 2000 M2 for $6800. HD chipped in $1800 for the shock recall... I sold my 1982 Sportster to pay the difference.

Now on the 1125cr purchase, HD is chipping in $5k and I'm selling my 05 Sporty to pay the difference. : ) (I feel like I'm taking advantage of a spiteful break-up... sure we'll hear more about that history in time.... Keep making those great business decisions Wendell! .. o.. and try not to stomp out any more American icons along the way... sorry had to get that out. )

Anyway... To add to my 'purchase justifications', I figured this will be the last time I'll be able to experience a "new Buell purchase"... especially a liquid cooled Buell.

I did notice the stator overheating issue on badweb... and let the dealership know about it. Thankfully I'm good friends with teh salemen.

They said the updated wiring harness is on the way and will install it if shows up before taking delivery.
After reading about the effects of this issue, I don't think I'm comfortable with even starting the bike until the new wiring harness is installed.

Is there anything else I should have the dealer resolve before taking delivery?

So far all my new and used Buell purchases have been pleasant.... I'd like to keep the tradition going. : )

Here is the info I saw on badweb.
Buell Motorcycle Company has determined that a potential
charging system issue exists on 2009 and 2010 1125R and
1125CR models as well as 2008 1125R models that have
been refitted with a 2009 or 2010 replacement engine. On
these models the stator may operate at temperatures that
exceed the manufacturer’s recommendation when the vehicle
is ridden in lower-rpm (below 5,000 rpm) duty cycles. These
model motorcycles described above may experience charging
system issues related to excessive stator heat.
Buell Motorcycle Company has elected to initiate product program
0507 to remedy this issue.

In the interest of customer satisfaction, Buell Distribution Company, LLC is offering a no cost
upgrade installation of a sub-harness which provides the improved charging system durability on
the motorcycles described above built prior to September 24, 2009.

It looks like it includes a new subharness between the stator and the ECM, which includes a relay that will "disconnect" one leg of the AC output under the sub-5k conditions to help prevent overheating.

IT IS NOT A RECALL.

It is a Product Campaign - which means that IF your motorcycle fits the VIN list, **AND** it exhibits the problems noted in the campaign, it *qualifies* to have the repair done free of charge.

Many bikes - like my personal CR - fall in the VIN list but operate perfectly normally. If your dealer is willing to pre-emptively do the update, more power to you. If not...ride it, pay attention to it, and if the problem manifests itself the update is available for you.

IF your bike exhibits the problem, and IF you want to know if you qualify for the update, have your dealer run your VIN number (the WHOLE vin number) to verify eligibility. It's that easy.

My battery light came on at a traffic light the other day. When the bike is about to be started the battery light is on and when the kill switch is used the battery light goes on. Is this light telling me that my ignition is in a battery draining state or am I running off of the battery?

As a 250lb. guy this bike was anything but relaxing to ride. The baby buggy front to back rocking was alarming but familiar.

I just had the bike set up by my old friend Dave at GP Suspension. If you are NOT a 170 lb. rider do yourself a favor get it done first. The bikes balance, clutch and power delivery is now very relaxed. This thing cuts into a turn so nicely and is now completely settled when power is applied.

Any way we can figure out if our VIN vehicle identification number falls in the listed list without having to call contact the dealer for verbal spoken verification concurance of the vehicle identification VIN number?

Nope, have to contact a dealer (forgive me for not seeing the difficulty there), they're the only ones with access to the system.

You can rule your bike out immediately if it was built after Sept 2009.

You can email me your VIN at jgoetz@hdoffrederick.com and I can check it for you, but you're still gonna have to have a dealer perform the work if the bike qualifies.

They install a parts kit to redo the wiring from stator to charging system and ECM, and reflash the ECM to run things with the new additions. It does NOT involve opening the engine at all - it is just a wiring change and ECM flash.

Honestly...dunno.

Email EBR. Subject line "inquiry - stator update with EBR race ECM". Give them your history, and any invoice number / ECM number / bike info they may need to reference your race ECM purchase, so they know exactly what computer you have. Ask them if the race ECM can be updated at a dealership with the charging system update. I have no doubt they'll get back to you.

And...please let me know. I've been asked a couple of times already : ) Either that, or cc: me on the email, jgoetz@hdoffrederick.com

Would I even know if I had a stator over heating problem if I always have my bike on a tender and only take 1 hour trips?

I've not experienced any starting problems hot or cold. I even ride with my brights on during the day, which is probably sucking a lot of juice.

Just got a response from EBR, Michael Richter : " Let them do the updates to the bike and the reflash on your stock ECM. The dealer will not be able to connect to your race ECM."

For all 1125r/cr built before 9/24/09, I highly recommend getting the wiring harness update. No need to wait for your stator to cook.
It could happen to you AFTER your warranty runs out... wonder what that would cost... and what other damage that can occur.

I'm not even going to start mine until it's fixed.

Call your dealer and find out.

My understanding of the notice is, qualifying bikes have 2 years from issuance of the bulletin to get fixed. Not a "recall" per se, but a standing offer to fix affected bikes. I *think* that means that even if a bike is out of its own warranty, but within the 2 years of the notice, it still qualifies.

I think.

Again, check with your dealer. My service manager is in tomorrow so I'll ask him then.

I'm guessing that this issue isn't a problem on the bikes built AFTER Sep 24, 09? Reason I ask is that I have an 09 CR and it only has about 2200 miles on it. I guess I'm gonna go check on the date of manufacture when I get home tonight. The bike has shown ZERO problems on any functions so far, but the stator could just fry at 4200-ish miles potentially if it has this problem?

The wiring fix to to prevent damage to the stator, not to fix it. Waiting for t5he stator to fail is pretty silly.

I just went home and looked at my bike's date of manufacture. It says it was built in October 08. When I bought it back in August, the dealer listed it as an 09 model. I guess it is an 09 model if it was built towards the end of 08? Please no one make fun of me for asking stupid questions, as this is my first Buell ever, and this is my third post on this site. Does this stator issue apply to my bike?

OK so even though no one is responding to this thread anymore really, I emailed Erik Buell Racing and the Tech there emailed me back saying that if I bought the bike in August '10, then it should have the harness upgrade already. He said that if I take off the seat and look in the left side of the subframe, on the outside part of it, in the void between the fairing and the frame, there should be an extra relay which will show that the upgraded harness is on the bike. Hope this helps anyone.

hi guys... i got a 2009 1125 cr, built in jan/09, so i guess i'm eligible for the update.... the only problem is that i bought the bike and took it to south america, so i'm wondering if i can just call the dealer i bought from and ask them to mail me the parts.... do you think that's possible? Does anyone know the part number for the update kit?
