The rear brake is pretty much worthless on my CR. I know rear brakes on most modern sport bikes aren't strong, but my CR is horrible. Even when used at slow speeds, it has very little effect.

I really like to use the rear brake for slow speed maneuvering (parking lots, etc) and when creeping up on stopped cars waiting at a light.

I am wondering if anyone has experimented with different brake pads or has any other ideas. I know there is little that can be done other than brake pads, but I am definitely open to suggestions.

I have heard that they get better with more use. Mine is probably in the same catagory as yours though where it is nearly useless.

Go bed it in, it improves. Also, if you don't use it consistently, it suffers from the junk being dumped on it by the exhaust. Mine howls the first few times I use it in the morning and then shuts up and works fine.

It does take a good bit of force, but I've never felt it was insufficient to do low speed work with, and I use it to hold myself on slopes all the time.

It'll lock the rear tire up if you stomp on it, so... I have no real complaints.

For the first 700 miles by rear brake was a complete waste of time. It wouldn't even hold the bike in my driveway.

After some serious work bedding it in, it now works - to some degree. Up until recently, the rotor still had the marks from being machined.

I still have been unable to lock up he rear unless I am nearly standing the bike on its head but it is way better than it was.

I would be less bothered by this if my dealer didn't respond to my complaints with "it is designed that way. They don't want people locking up the rear and suing".

You should be able to lock up the brakes on any non-ABS system, car or motorcycle. Anything less and you are not capable of using the brakes to their maximum effectiveness. Unsafe.

Use it more, once its set in, its nice and strong. Both my 1125's and my XB were weak when I first got them, after breaking them in they are great.

I'm with Syonyk. I can lock my rear brake on my XB and CR just fine.I use it quite a lot.

I tend to drag my rear for about half a block to clean it off when I take off for the first time in the day. If I forget to do this all the crap that builds up on the rotor make it basicly useless. When I remember to do it my rear brake has absolutly zero problem exceding the point when my rear stops rolling

Mines fine (only 200 miles on the bike). It's not massively strong but it'll scrub off some excess speed in the corners if needed, hold me on a hill and let me use it in the snow..

I can lock the back wheel if I want to - but I have to stomp pretty hard

I just replaced my rear pads(for the second time) a week or two ago.
I use the rear brakes a lot due to sand and gravel on the roads here from OCT-MAY, Loretta has 23.7k miles.

Just a note here, the old pads had the most even wear I have ever seen on a set of pads -
Both pads were down to about half a millimeter of material, even all around

When I got her back from the shop after getting a new fuel pump and the pads, there was nothing there when I stepped on the brake.
I did 3 or 4 good hard stops from 60-70 mph and the pads bedded in.

Before I got the Drummer, I did like Lastonetherebuys and would drag the rear brake while leaving my neighborhood to scrub it.

I have never had a problem with the rear brake once it got bedded in.

The rear brake should be all but impossible to lock up on a sport bike. It's job is mainly just to settle the bike in corners. The front brake effectively does all the stopping while the rear brake's job is to stabilize the bike enough to allow the front to do it's job.

All that being said, because these bikes blow exhaust residue on the brake it does need to be cleaned often or they can lose what little braking power they have.

For those wanting more rear brake, adjust the brake lever foot pad forward. Only adds maybe 1/2" of leverage, but it's enough to feel.

My '99M2 doesn't lock up the rear- not even close. I am hoping the '09CR is better.

BTW - I also added a half-inch spacer(and a longer screw) under the toe-peg.
I realized some of the time I was pressing on a screw-boss on the clutch cover rather than the brake peg.

Al at American Sport Bike sells some longer pegs IIRC.

Yeah,

I noticed right away the brake & shift peg weren't very long. Will probably look at AM down the road.

From reading what others have replied, I should be able to bed mine rear in and get better braking out of it. If that doesn't work, I may try AM pads.
