After nearly six weeks of letting them sit in the box, I finally got around to installing the high bar kit on my CR. I started the project one afternoon two and half weeks ago, then had to stop, and couldn't find the time to finish the job until yesterday.

My thoughts on the project:

Pros:
  • Improves the handling/manoeuvrability of the bike for me (I'm 5' 11")
  • Provides a better riding position for me to swivel my head

Cons:
  • Turn signal indicator is no long mounted straight out from the thumb, it's more pointing toward the sky.
  • Mirrors which were only marginally useful on the cafe bars, now are pretty much a total waste.
  • Wind no longer goes over your head, it hits you square on the chest because you're now in a more upright position.

Verdict:
Despite the cons, I do like the feel of the new bars on the bike, I might play around with the rotation of the bars and mirrors and see if I can find a happy medium, but I'm not sure how that will work.

I also added the traction grips I've been hording for a while. They feel absolutely wonderful!

I haven't put mine on yet but I'm surprised to hear the mirrors are a total waste. That was my assessment of them on the clubmans - I was looking forward to them being functional on the high bars.

I think part of the mirrors problem is the shape. I have a great view of my arms and jacket, but about the point where I can really start seeing traffic, the mirror narrows down to a point. You can only get so much movement from the mirrors because they are mechanically limited by how far the mirrors can get angled inside the stalks and how much (not much) movement you can get with the actual stalk itself.

I agree about the mirrors not working very well. I put a bar end mirror on and it's a lot better.

Has anyone tried turning the clubmans upside down? I'm sure it would require the longer cables.

Drill a hole in the bars to reset the position of the switch gear.

Check the highbar mirror thread - several useful ideas

I did several searches but couldn't find this thread, can you point it out?

Comfort for me was the biggest issue. I put Rizoma bars and 1" drop pegs on to help with that.

The mirror issue was more of a problem of looks over function. Knowing they didn't work with the clubmans was enough to know they were gone. Bar end mirrors and other turn signals were the answer.

The switchgear can be re-located by redrilling new index holes located on the back covers.

I have a hard time understanding why the index hole is wrong in the first place. Did everybody else redrill the index hole?

The index hole might not be wrong...the user may have rotated the bars in the clamps for some reason.

Buell's index holes are very weird in my opinion. The index hole on the right side leaves the throttle tube overhanging the end of the bar quite a bit. My left control also points skyward when the bars are aligned to the marks.

I aligned the bars where the alignment marks were, I'm going to adjust both them and the mirrors and see what happens.
