Hi

I have done a search and found a thread on how to re-install the stock exhaust but can't seem to locate one on how to remove it..

Is there a "how to" guide available for this. I'm guessing it's relatively straightforward as I can see some of you guys have done it in next to no time.

My new pipe is arriving in a few weeks and I'd like to get everything ready and have a "plan".

Sorry - it's just the "Project manager" in me : )

Jules,

Which exhaust are you getting. I just installed the FMF apex slip on and instructions for exhaust removal were superb.

The rear mount is straight forward, no issues there. The front mount was just as easy. Just be aware that the front mount shares the oil cooler grommets as well.

I did mine on a cold day, so the "packing" around the headers popped right off.

You might want to get stands for your bike, if you don't have them already.

Seems straight forward to me too, but I have not attempted this yet.

The hardest part for me was accessing the nut on the left front side of the lower part of the oil cooler/muffler bracket. I guess a crowfoot open end wrench would be the right tool there but I managed to jam the nut using a large flat bladed screw driver.

That's the only loose nut, the rest are captive in the muffler bracketry. Be sure to reinstall the oil cooler support even if the aftermarket muffler skips over that (like the HMF instructions did).

That's all good to hear - sounds relatively straightforward.

I'm getting one of the Barker exhausts so I was not certain if they'd have a set of instructions LOL

The only bit that concerned me was that I was certain I'd read something about the belt tentioner being in the way.. maybe I was mistaken.

I have a rear paddock stand, I'll see if I can borrow my front stand back from my mate (he's had it for about 2 years now LOL) but it sounds like I really only need the rear one.

The oil cooler nut sounds like the sticking point.. Might be the perfect excuse to buy some dogleg spanners.. I think that's just about the only tool I don't have yet : ) although as a fallback I do have some really big screwdrivers LOL

The factory Buell Service Manual is worth every penny if you plan on doing any of your own work.

The left rear bolt is accessed through the belt pulley. There are holes in it just for this purpose. Also, it makes it easier if you loosen the right side foot peg bracket (both bolts) as it relaxes tension on the muffler mount points. Don't forget to retighten them once you have the stock pipe off though. There are a total of 7 bolts to loosen. 2 are the foot peg bracket, 1 is the oil cooler bracket (totally remove this piece for exhaust removal, reinstall once you have it off) in the front, the other 4 are the muffler bolts. Obviously there's 2 clamps as well. It should take you no more than 10 minutes to remove the pipe. Undo everything on the front first, including the clamps, then do the bolt through the pulley and last, the bolt for the right side, followed by the foot peg bracket. As you loosen the bracket, the exhaust will start to shift down. Put something under it (towel, foam, whatever) to prevent damage, then wiggle it some, it will come off quite easily.

Thanks everyone - that's exactly what I was after.

I'll bite the bullet and buy a Servive Manual, I don't mind the cost of the book but the shipping is almost as much!

there is a little more to take off if you buy a full exhaust as you will have to "rotate" the motor to remove and install the rear header pipe......

I removed and installed my stock muffler this evening; and found that the left front bracket bolt's backing nut is 13mm, and can be reached (on my CR) with a regular angled open end wrench if you come up from under the oil cooler. Turn the wrench sideways to get it in there, then back again and there's enough room to engage it fully.
