Still new to the Buell so this may be a dumb question. Noticed when the tach hits 5000 rpm and beyond the tach needle lights up. Why and what does this mean? Bike has 1800 miles on it.

It is a shift light. I find it hard to notice during the day. It will kick on at 5k when in neutral, or about 10k in gear.

Or maybe V-tech is kicking in yo : p

Built in shift light...since I never hit the redline riding I had no idea. Thanks Froggy.

It also does it when it's cold. I've seen it around 5500-6000 rpm when it's not fully warmed up. I'm guessing this is a feature to keep you from blowing up your motor. The engine will stutter some like it hits a soft rev limiter while it's cold.

Now that I have noticed. I just never got up to the V-tech RPM levels Captain America shifts at (during his sidewalk speed trials).

Yes, the brightening tach needle is a variable shift indicator. Cold or free rev, it will light up sooner (I've had mine come on as early as 3k). Full warm with a load - i.e. actually *riding* the bike - and it will come on right around 10k (9800?).

It is hard to see in daylight. But at night it pretty much screams "SHIFT DUMMY" : )

Captain you could tape the throttle wide open and just use the on/off switch. Getting her warmed up might be a problem tho.

You guys are hilarious...

I remember i first noticed the shift light on our bikes in a video for an HMF pipe... i couldn't remember ever seeing my needle glow.

some immedately i was in the garage trying to see if mine did it too. and what do you know, i had it too.

Completely worthless in the day though. they should have put an actual LIGHT not a glowing needle.
