have you been having trouble starting lately? can you flood a fuel injected engine? when you flood an engine you are just washing the cylinders with gas which may eventually lead past the rings into the oil? dannybuell | ||

You shouldn't be getting gas in the oil. Fuel systems are even close to the oil system. Not to say you don't have that issue! Make sure your not checking it or smelling it when the frames warm cause fuel venting out can be really strong, or in a closed/semi-closed area. You can't flood a EFI system. The injectors are controlled by the ecm and ignition. If the ignition isn't operating then they shouldn't spray fuel. That's if I remember correctly! | ||

you can flood an EFI system thats why you dont roll on the throttle when your starting it. Unlike some older carburated motors | ||

have you changed your oil cause if you have way more than 3 quarts that would be a sure fire way to tell if you are getting something in your oil and if it smells like gas then it prob is as for why this is happening dont know the details on it ie. how many miles on it, how you ride it (average distance and how hard) | ||

OH SNIT! Not this again... The same doom and gloom observation was made in the early years of the V-Rod. I'm approaching 50K on my '03 V-Rod without any issues (and yes, the oil does have a slight gasoline smell). It used to accumulate around 10K miles each year and now it rarely gets ridden - more fun with the Buell's and I'm finding less occasions where I worry about taking a gun (Buell) to a knife fight (H-D gathering). I suspect this is 'normal' and nothing to worry about, 1313 | ||

If you are starting it a lot and not giving it time to warm up you will get some gas smell in the oil. Remember a very tiny bit of gas smells pretty strong..its like blood..a tablespoon and it looks like there is a massacre... Don't just go by smell..does the oil look or feel diluted? Have an analysis done if you are really worried, but I would bet it is a combination of several cold starts and short runs on a bike that is not yet broken in. Also..if you are letting the bike idle till it is warm before driving off it will run in a rich cold start condition longer than if you just get on it and ride off gently. This will also contribute to a gassy smelling oil. | ||

Anyone ever really get gasoline on their dipstick? Seems like it would sting, maybe even burn a little. | ||

That made me laugh out loud Blake. My dog came in from the other room and looked at me. Probably wondering why I was laughing alone in the house. I always check my dipstick, before and after my wife lets me go for a ride (she has the key), but have never gotten a hint of any gasoline odor. (Message edited by dentguy on January 30, 2010) | ||

Thanks to all for the feedback especially the esteemed Mr. Hairy_Cannonball. Your diagnosis is accurate and well put, thanks. Also, your username congers quite an image? I only have a thousand miles on the clock and I've broken it in very gently, probably too gently. Given the advice here, I will encourage the piston rings and the cylinder walls to get better acquainted. The thing is so damn fast, I have trouble finding the opportunity to crank it up. |
