Ok am just wondering are there any real benefits of having the fairings or are they just for the looks? Do they dissipate heat away from the rider? What is everyones opinion on the subject matter? I do like the look either way just interested is it function or form?

They definitely look good. They may also reduce drag. I haven't seen them up close to see how they fit, etc.

Mine also help protect the engine in a crash. I've put plenty of glass on the insides where they grind through. If I could only learn to not fall I wouldn't need to do this.

Some side panels also allow you to get rid of the fans and lose about 15-20 pounds.

I bought mine purely for the aesthetics, I really didn't like the look of the pods and was surprised the side fairings just fit over them... But they work (esthetically) and really improve the looks (for me at least) and as they are so quick to put on and off I can just whip them off whenever I fancy the naked look..

Ive had my bike since Nov and it had the fairings on when I bought it. I just went over 1400 miles and I havent dealt with the heat issue yet. Im not sure if its because NJ is freezin or if its the fairings. I did a small 300 mile cruise last week since it was almost 50 and I did have my first run in with the fairing contacting the header. SMOKE! It melted the inside edge but I plan on doing what red did and use some stainless steel mesh to keep them apart. I guess this summer I will know if the fairings do much. Riding a Softail in the summer around Philadelphia was a nut cooker

They seem to help with buffetting and strong crosswinds. I could feel the difference before and after. Not sure about the heat part...it's still Winter here.
