Just traded in my XB12S FOR ONE OF THE 1125CR's.
Great bike but I'm shocked at the mpg giving just 35mpg average. Just wondered if any one else has mpg that low and is it only while running in or until the first service.

I am a bit worried about mine as well. I was getting 28. That sucks.
My trip meter had gone to just 68 miles when I put 4.5 gallons in yesterday. Surely I missed the reset or something. 1200 miles on the bike. There is alot of variability between bikes of the same type, and no one has ever explained why.
The classic disclaimer is to mention rider style. When I short shift and putter around, I still get crappy mileage.+

Big injectors I think. Much more horsepower. Mine only gets in the 30's so far. My tubers get 50-60..

Why do some CRs get 28 and others 35 mpg? That is a 25% discrepancy between bikes of the same type. I think it was froggy who said he got 45 MPG on his R model, but really bad mileage on his CR. I know the ratios are different but I don't think that would account for the difference.

I am currently getting about 40mpg on my 1125CR, with peak average over a full tank was 53mpg. Running an older flash, I don't know the number off hand.

My 08R is getting much worse, newest flash, but its at only 700 miles so I can't write it off yet.

What makes the difference? I always seem to be on the bad side of the bell curve with motorcycle mileage, and I am very aware of my riding style when I am trying to conserve. I think a bike with a 5 gallon tank should be able to go more than 125 miles. Air cleaner/flash, TPS,etc...The bike is new. I usually operate between 4 and 5.5 Gs when I am puttering around town, thinking this is the method to save fuel. I cranked up the pace a bit of late and it looks like my mileage is now even worse.

Froggy also has hyper-miler tendancies, so his numbers need to be taken in context.

My CR is generally in the mid-upper 30's, but to be honest I've stopped paying attention. I just don't care anymore!

And you have to expect it's going to be worse than an XB - you're using 7% LESS displacement to make 42% MORE power.

I would not care about getting 30MPG if I was riding the Buell like I ride my SV when I am relaxing. Keep it in the powerband, brake hard, accelerate, shift high. The point is, I am trying to see what my best mileage could be on the Buell, AND IT'S BELOW AVERAGE, EVEN FOR A BUELL CR. It may not matter to you, but unexplained discrepancies, about anything, bug me. I just like to understand. And I don't get the mileage thing.

Winter gas might be a small factor this time of year. I get 35 to 38 putting around town but I don't mind 3000 rpm putting.

quote:

brake hard

Don't. In fact, don't brake at all. Clutch in coast to slow down. If you are using your brakes, you are riding too hard or fast. I only use them at under about 20mph to come to a complete stop at lights/signs/etc.

quote:

accelerate

Don't. Acceleration, especially hard acceleration is where you burn the most energy. It takes more power to get going than to keep going.

quote:

shift high.

Shift early. 2k on my Xb, 3500-4k on my 1125s.

quote:

Winter gas might be a small factor this time of year.

Correct. I am currently experiencing 10-15mpg less on my Blast than the summer gas. Also the longer warmup and more idle time in the winter will also kill it.

Thanks Froggy(for the hypermiling lesson). I think if you read my post you will see that I am already aware of these things. What I want to understand is why my mileage is bad when I am doing THE RIGHT STUFF.
And don't worry about hypermiling downgraders. It is just another interesting aspect of motoring if you ask me. I often do it to prevent boredom when driving my truck. I DO try to stay out of the way of others who are going faster, but I find with practice you can easily keep up with traffic and make haste across town if you concentrate. Obviously I am a failure at it on the Buell. I think if I bought a sail, used teflon tires, ran on one sparkplug and always rode downhill, my mileage would still be worse than everyone else's.

I do find it perplexing that my crude carburated S3 puts out ~100HP and can haul me down the interstate @80mph and still get 60MPG but my 'high tech' full injected Uly barely gets mid forties for the same HP and displacement at the same speed with the same load. Yes the Uly may have a bit less of an aerodynamic profile but why the 25% change in mileage?

I average 39-41 all day in complete stock form ( 09-1125 CR )I do keep it under 6k most of the time but when I feel the need sky is the limit. I ride highway, hills, sweepers, and in town .

Highway speeds here in NV are 65-75 and I can cruise all day at those speeds in comfort. The high bars help but wind is a factor above 80mph.

Here Is My mileage from day one to yesterday...

MPG 1125

Which is waaaay better than the mpg I get with my '72 El Camino, boosted Small Block below

MPG Sprint

Basically I DGAF what my CR gets... I can ride it HARD (the 26-29 mpg parts) and still save lots compared to my daily driver El Camino

You can see now that I have basically retired my Chev to the weekends and am riding the CR full time. And the mileage on the Chev is plus a 100,000...

I commute 130miles round trip to work 5 days a week from Riverside to LA in southern California traffic between 25-85mph

I got it for seat-of-your-pants mileage.

You need to track mileage like CA does- over time. You need to fill up the same way every time. Taking a geek pad with you to track miles and gallons used will better help see what is going on over time.

The best MPG test is long trips on interstates or 2 lane highways with little right and abuse. This will give a better highway indication.

Only checking mileage once in awhile won't tell you the true picture.

My bikes:
FJR- 35-40mpg (sometimes in the low 40's)
'99M2-40-50
'00 super X- no idea yet, but not great
'09 CR- only put 50 miles so far, but will track

I'm trying to make you guys understand.
I have been paying close attention to the fill procedure.
I reset my trip odometer every fillup.

I drive like your granny when I am really trying hard.

I will need a blow torch to free up the throttle when I finally finish my fuel analysis, cause I don't twist it hard enough to break the seal on a Tabasco bottle.

I am getting bad fuel mileage and I DON"T THINK IT'S ME. What could be different about my 09 CR than the other 3098?

Possibilities;

You are all lying except Illbuell.

You are all lying and Illbuell is a ringer.

I don't understand the funny number thing that goes around on the funny pump thing at the gas place.

Something is WRONG with my motorcycle and I will have to take it down to the Harley place again where some dork calls me "brother" and says they "will make it happen" and I will be without my motorcycle for days.

I can't think of anything else at the moment.
Personally, I think your are all LYING and should stop because I don't think it's very nice. I will continue to hate you all until somebody tells me what's WRONG.

Oh, and the cage, which almost never moves. I should delete that one bad tank, I wasn't driving.

Dam you all.. I hate your stupid spreadsheets and your fancy bar graphs showing me what a LOSER I am. Next it will be some James Cameronesque 3D presentation with a bunch of refiners pointing at me and LAUGHING.
I have the latest reflash, oh Master of the Obvious. Captain, I appreciate your attempt to placate me, but I WILL NOT BE PLACATED.

I'm beginning to smell a big fat commie RAT.

You are all out to get me. Don't think I don't know it. I see you snickering behind the cigar display down at the gas place.

How can I be DEAD LAST in the fuel mileage race? Perhaps Illbuell is making an effort to SUCK worse than me. Yeah right. He's probably WFO on the sidewalk running down schoolkids, and I bet he's still getting better mileage than me.

Got 31mpg last tank. That's about normal for me. Best i've got is 36. My xb9sx got 48-55mpg always.

I've never tried to get good mileage for a whole tank, but the worst i've gotten is 28. I believe the previous flash got better highway mpg just based on the gauge clusters instant mpg. I was seeing high 50's on the way home in 5th gear. I can't get it that high even in 6th gear with the latest flash.

The bike runs much better though.
