After installing an aftermarket exhaust or even a high performance air filter, is your bike now experiencing surging, jerkiness or deceleration poping? These symptoms are typical of a motor that is running too lean. Instead of the high priced remedies, read the following tried and true reasonable fix.

The FatDuc manipulator is an ingenious device that fools the ECU into thinking less lean A/F mixture. Highly regarded and successful with Ducatis (I had one) and other bikes equipped with the closed loop system for Euro emissions. The FatDuc fixes problems associated with aftermarket exhaust systems like surging, jerkiness and decell popping. Instead of having to purchase a new ECU or some other expensive fix the FatDuc does all that with a plug and play connector.

I started to look into this when I watched a video of an FMF exhaust on UTube. What I didn't like was the excessive deceleration popping. I then discovered the Buell is a likely candidate for the FatDuc and since then I've been talking to its inventor, Jason Borders. After exchanging emails and pictures of my Buell, Jason has agreed to come up with a prototype for testing purposes. There is a possibility the Buell may require two devices because there are two 02 sensors, similar to the Duc 1098.

This device is the real deal. There are hundreds of them currently on newer Ducatis and the feedback is miraculous. On the website Multistrada.net in the Product Review section theres a dedicated sticky to the FatDuc. To learn more about it and what it does go to www.FatDuc.com.

Now all Jason needs is a volunteer bike, preferably one with the above symptoms. Again, this is no BS and if you research the device at all you will see it works. Many on the Ducati forums call it a life saver in a financial sense and also a performance sense. I would volunteer my bike but I have yet settled on an aftermarket system for it. I would imagine the device is highly beneficial in the case of the full system upgrade.

Let me know if you want to install the FatDuc on your bike and I'll let Jason know. The one difference between the Ducati set up and the Buell 02 sensor is the fact Ducati has a four wire whereas the Buell only one. Jason advised he will be installing a separate ground wire into his connector which will attach to a ground point close to the 02 sensor.

The FatDuc is also adjustable with a small dial on the connector for rich or lean mixtures.

because these gizmos only compensate at cruise within a certain range of the rpm band and idle... nothing more... WOT or above a predetermined rpm in the ecm the O2 sensors are ignored.. why? because these sensor can not read a wide enough range of a/f ratio... generally they read from 14.3 to 15.3 a/f ratio...
N/A engine need 12.8-13/1 a/f for aggressive throttle inputs or WOT...

this will work somewhat but truly its a band aid... a proper tune would work 1000X better..

Narrow Band sensors are worthless! wideband is the way to go!

I have been running a modified map since before I got the Drummer.
I'm about to get Loretta flashed with the latest and greatest under warranty.
She currently is running a modified M3HUS05Z flash.
Seems like a perfect time to test this thing out.

I don't expect drag-race performance gains.
Rideability sits high in my ratings tho.

I also understand the limited nature of the O2 sensors used.
So I guess I'm back to modifying the base map but add something like this to fatten the cruising mode while utilizing closed loop.

I like the way Loretta is running but I'm sure it could be improved.

The only issue I see is, in BOTH of these threads the device is referred to as a unit that makes the ECM think the engine is running richer.

Unless it's just written wrong...this is NOT what you want to do.

All arguments against "fooling" an ECM aside, if you want it to run richer....you need to make it *think* it's running lean so it will throw more fuel into the mix.

So....are the posts incorrectly written? Or does this unit actually make the ECM think it's running rich (which would cause it to go lean)?

It makes it think it's running lean by lowering the O2 sensor voltage signal to the ECU.

We need to keep the two FatDuc threads together.

Yikes I kind of stepped into it here. In other words I'm a lay person trying to detail a technical device thereby misleading unintentionally. I appologize for that and I'll only comment as a laison between the people interested here and the FatDuc inventor, Jason Borders. What I will do is ask Jason to join in, he will provide the straight scoop regarding the device.

Justabanger: according to the tech info below, the FatDuc has the range capability to read the appropriate a/f ratios, 14.2/1 - 13.0/1. I had mine adjusted to a/f pot 13.2 on my 2v Ducati Multistrada. The device works when the bike is in the closed loop mode, the lower RPM range, around 4K-4.5K rpm was what I recall. It really helps the rideability issues associated with exhaust upgrades, even with my stock system there was noticible improvement in idle and throttle/clutch smoothness. Jason can respond to this, he is very knowledgeble in this subject matter.

Hdwrechtx: Your bike sounds like the ideal test candidate and others as well.

Captain America: There was some discussion where narrowband was discussed. To be honest, the initial testing was on the Ducati.ms sight in 2008 and the thread went on for 30 pages and at times was so technical I came to the conclusion I'm a dumb ass.

Zac4mac: You are on all cylinders in your expections regarding what the FatDuc can hopefully do for your bike's performance.

RatBuell: Your conclusions are my fault as I indicated earlier for using words or statements surrounding the FatDuc. Like using the word "fooled" for one. I think I simply picked it up because someone else said it, like a catch word. More accurately the FatDuc makes the ECU think by lowering the voltage at the 02 sensor which causes the ECU to add more fuel, just as you indicated. Maybe "trick" is a better word?

Below is the lead off statements from the FatDuc website. It pretty much responds to the statements/issues above.

O2 Manipulators(FatDuc)are an economical solution to alter the closed loop air-fuel ratio on many Ducati Motorcyles. O2 Manipulators are “plug and play” requiring NO cutting or splicing of wires and installs inline at the factory oxygen sensor connection. O2 Manipulators work by altering the oxygen sensor output voltage. This slight reduction in voltage forces the ECU to add additional fuel.

O2 Manipulators are weather resistant and built using only the highest quality components, featuring OEM connectors and printed circuit board technology. The printed circuit board allows for a very rugged and reliable product, but the overall package remains small and unobtrusive. O2 Manipulator circuit's are fully variable allowing the user to fine tune the device to their particular setup. The altered air-fuel ratio output range is 14.2/1 - 13.0/1 calculated using a base target of 14.7/1.

Go to www.FatDuc.com to review a/f ratios on the dyno, click technical info box on home page. Also, the FatDuc is not compatible with systems that bypass the bike's 02 sensor.

I know of about 5 people that have the Fatduc and it works, if it can be modded to work on the 1125, then it will definitely improve the drivability.
