I honestly think that Buell will be back eventually. HD made a business decision and it is what it is. But from everything I've been reading about Buell from the last 6 months to a year, they've been starting to get better and more well known in the sportbike circles and his bikes have been very highly regarded. (except some of the liter-bike/euro fans don't like the looks of the Buell, I happen to think they look hot) And I think I read somewhere that Erik Buell didn't sign away the rights to his bike design when HD bought them. So he's still got that going for him. Better HD buying them and doing what they did - whether people like it or not - than Buell being taken over by Ducati or Aprilla (or worse...one of the Jap bikes) and then we'd probably be totally screwed. And I just read a comparison against the 1125cr and the Ducati Streetfighter where the reviewer is complaining about the looks of the Buell..... Dude...did you happen to look at the ugliness that was the Streetfighter? I'll be honest, I didn't know a thing about Buell up until about 2 months ago. But I'm more and more impressed the more I find out about him and his bikes. Buell will be involved in racing and he'll re-make a name for himself. At that point I would bet he'll be back and he won't need HD to back him. Then for you fans of Buell that have been around a while you can say you stuck with him even when HD didn't. And for us new fans, we can say we bought in at the end of an era and will be glad when he comes back. I'm just sayin...and I hope I'm right. | ||

So let me get this straight. Harley has committed to servicing Buell motorcycles for the next seven years. So, in order to ensure they have the necessary parts on hand to do that, they liquidate an entire warehouse full of Buell parts. Oh baby! I can FEEL the support! | ||

I'm not seeing that. I'm seeing the liquidation of their assets, but certainly not the motorcycle parts. I could be wrong but when I went thru the list earlier thats not the impression I get. | ||

Yeah, that's manufacturing equipment not parts. However, I'm wondering who will be making the parts at year 6 when numbers for certain obscure things get skinny. Do they have what the perceive to be 7 years worth of parts warehoused, or will they manufacture parts to Buell specs when needed? If you have the extended factory warranty you may have a little more leverage for hard to find parts. But if a part ain't there, it ain't there. | ||

My bet is it will be just like older cars. People are still making those parts. There are 100,000 or so Buells out there. Someone will make those parts...maybe even Buell will at that point. But if not, whoever Buell licenses to make those parts....are probably going to be wealthy people. But he's continuing the racing business with the 1125 as a platform and has had success doing it. Thats why I still think eventually the Buell will be back...and hopefully stronger than before. Because with HD shutting Buell down, it has brought a whole new group of Buell owners that otherwise probably never would be. (me for one - and probably many others on this board) I realize I'm new the the world of Buell, but as a businessman, it just makes sense. So on that note... Black, I hope I'm right too. | ||

The real question is: how could anyone make money building Buells with their high costs (the Rotax is U$5,000 each) and then compete with the Japs. Answer: noone, which is why HD pulled the plug, and likely why they're dumping the assets. | ||

Because I don't think its the Japs that they're competing for. Well, yes they are just on the aspect that we're talking sportbikes. But they are going after the Ducati/v-twin sport bike market. A market that with the reviews the 1125's have been getting, are markets that they can win. Ducati has name recognition. Buell was just starting out in that market with the 1125's. Being American made is a big deal to many people and they were a couple/few thousand dollars cheaper. But in this economy, people aren't buying bikes. Especially $13,000 bikes. The racing market isn't going anywhere. So it makes sense that Buell is going to continue on with it especially with the success they've had with the 1125. | ||

Boy, I found that depressing to review. Industrial auctions generally signify the demise of a business so are sad enough anyway - but when it's Buell??? Just heartbreaking... | ||

It will be interesting to know what parts are actually made by Buell. HD can just order Buell parts as needed from Austria, China, Italy, Japan (any other countries??). Right? | ||

Someone please explain how HD can justify spending $125 million to shutdown Buell?? I just can't figure how that is a way to save money. Can anybody explain this insane behavior? | ||

Well, Not being an expert on the stock market, which is not a bad thing today, I figure that Harley was probably trying to boost the price of their stock. Dump parts of your company that aren't performing well at the moment...control and get concessions from the unions......voila!...and the price of your stock jumps. It is a tried and true formula. Look at H-D. A couple of years ago, their stock was $70 bucks or so a share. Last summer, it was a tenth of that. It is now $23.00 a share. Keeps your creditors at bay....the Enron way! Sorry, couldn't help that. I notice that Willie G. is one smiling fellow as they release the new Sporty that will win over the youth market. I am very concerned for Harley's financial future. | ||
