Out of curiosity I ordered the metal plate that fits the 2010 lower belt guard:

Once fitted to the plastic portion, you're not going to get the guard back into place without loosening the rear wheel. So I fitted the plate behind the belt, and screwed it to the plastic. Now I need a 7mm spanner to tighten them properly!

Leave it to BMC to make the simple task of removing the lower guard, into a difficult one. Wait until the unsuspecting dealer tries to remove it!

Also, the 2009 manual lists a manifold and hoses for the air pressure sensor; so also out of curiosity, I ordered one of these, too. Unlike the plate (see above) this was dead simple to install.

The manifold arrives assembled just as you see it, to fit into the space available. Now if I just knew what it did for me!

I've long harbored pet theories about that lower belt guard and the occasional mysterious belt breaks that seemed to happen on light down shifts.

My guess is the 2010 design is all about preventing the oscillations that led to snags...
