Bike is pretty much brand new. I've only rode it home from the dealership on a frigid night, and stored it in the garage for the last month.

Went to start it up and the battery was almost dead. Unhooked the battery, and charged it. Hooked it back up and the bike was really reluctant to start.

Finally got it started and it's spitting out all this smoke. Smells like it's running rich as all heck.

Smells so bad and looks so bad I'm afraid to let it get to operating temperature.

Air filter looks fine with no obstructions.

Could my disconnecting the battery have caused this?

Does it just need to relearn itself?

actually i think what you are seeing is moisture jesse. min will spit what looks like white smoke almost till the cold light goes off. it's just steam. wouldn't worry bout that. i have the same smell as well. mins=es still pretty new and hasn't had the new map yet. i hear that will improve things greatly. my average mpg is somewhere around 28 mpg. i hear that improves to around 35 to 45 when mapped so i'm guessing that will fix the extra rich mixture. don't know much about the battery thing but i don't think it will hurt. i have always disconnected at least the negative terminal when charging.

Boy howdy, the one thing these bikes are NOT when stock is rich....

U in a garage? Wait, just looked @ your profile.... MN doesn't have balmy days during the winter...!

If you can do it w/o suffocating yourself, let it get up to temp. Then unhook battery and recharge, then let it sit till you can ride it!

Rough to have to just gaze longingly at your new love till spring... But it will be worth it!

i also have noticed at start up under cold conditions my 1125r also smokes excessivly until warm. i just got the bike a little over a month ago and was a little worried with the amount of smoke that was produced at start up on a cold morning. the smoke cleared after the bike had reached operating temps though. i checked this forum and found several post about this same issue and seems to be very common. mine does not smell bad that i have noticed though. this could partially be due to fuel build up if u had cranked the bike over several times with a no start due to dead battery though. i would try letting the bike get to operating temp and see if the smoke clears out. if so this is probably a normal condition for the bike. if not i would take it to the dealer and have them check it out

The computer fattens the mix when cold.

Think "choke".

The smoke isn't smoke. It's steam, as noted above. Condensation in the engine and exhaust comes out in a cloud. Totally normal.

As with any Buell, though...DON'T START IT UNLESS YOU'RE GONNA RIDE IT. And ride it for at least 30 minutes. If all you're gonna do is fire it up and sit on it making the "vroom vroom" noise...you're better off leaving the battery on the charger.
