Is it possible to replace a gauge cluster on a 2008 1125R with one from another wrecked 1125R? I know this is possible on newer Ducatis as long as you have the programming key or programming code. Is there something similar for the Buells, or are they "mated" forever between the ECM, Key, and Cluster?

I have no experience with this, but in an attempt to get you an answer quickly...

Once an ECM and IC are "mated" the IC can no longer be used on any other bike. I think maybe you'd have to yank the ECM and the IC and transplant them to the host bike.

I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure I remember this happening across the pond to a fellow who bought a used IC and was told he could use it on his bike.

I'm fairly sure I've seen a recent post where an 08 owner has put an 09 IC on their R and now as the gear indicator...

I don't recall seeing anything about needing the ECU too (but the post wasn't about that so it's a possibility).

Once an IC is installed on the bike, a timer starts. I think it's 30 minutes. When the time runs out, the IC is married to the bike permanently. It can't be used on another bike.

You can swap ecm's and IC's in any combination you want as long as the security isn't enabled at the time of the swap. The biggest issue is that the ecm retrieves the vin from the instrument cluster. So if you bring your bike in for service, the ecm will show the vin of whatever bike you are taking the ic from. It's not a huge deal, but I'm not sure how the dealers will work with that though.

The 30-minute time is only for new instrument clusters that haven't been mated to an ecm before. Once the 30-minutes mating period is up, the new ic takes the vin from the ecm and it cannot be changed.

Thanks for your help guys! I figured it was paired with the ECM, but just wanted to make sure.

One ordered new will have the VIN preloaded into it, possibly mileage too if it works like that
