Well, 300 miles on the CR and I figured nice weather (70ish and clear), I'd go ahead with my plan : )

Had the bike baselined. Original baseline (8/15/09) was 132.76 hp / 74.56 tq; 95 degrees F, 29.76 in-Hg, 26% humidity. Dynojet dyno, SAE correction but I'll have to pull the file to get the factor, but it shows STD: 1.04 on the chart. Maybe it's uncorrected?

Today, 300 miles, *bone stock* 1125CR. Dynoed with the factory flash first (10/27/08 build; M3PUS12z calibration), 70 degrees or so, clear weather, same dyno as the original baseline. Red line on the chart. Uploaded the 152 flash, dynoed again. Blue line. Less than 10 minutes between runs.

Pre-flash: 142.71 hp / 80.06 tq, red.
Post-flash: 143.18 hp / 81.72 tq, blue.

NOTICABLE difference. It's a crappy cell pic, I can figure out how to upload the actual file tomorrow (we did it right before close so I didn't have time to monkey with it).

Now, I'm sure people will want to disregard the total numbers, claiming "bad dyno", "needs a recal", whatever. I'm fine with that. I don't ride numbers, I ride a motorcycle...and I LOVE the way this one runs!

I'm looking at the smoother curves, and the fact that both HP *and* tq went up with the flash. It was also noticeable on the ride home, as many people have noted - much smoother fueling, less 'hiccuping'.

Again, this is a BONE STOCK '09 CR. Unless heated grips, touring seat, and '10 LED taillight give more HP, LOL.

Hats off to the Elves, this is a nice solid flash! : )

Those are VERY high numbers my friend. I'd be super stoked to have such a stout engine.

I got the flash on Friday and took the CR to the track on Saturday. I can tell you without a doubt, that the newest flash is SWEET! I thought it was pretty damn spot on before, but now it's a lot smoother, especially off idle.

When I changed the anti-freeze to Water Wetter, I discovered that there was no coolant in the overflow tank. I've never had my bike run hot, but since changing out the coolant, bleeding the system, and running distilled water and Water Wetter, even bouncing off the rev limiter in 3rd and 4th gears lapping JenningsGP for 30 minute sessions...coolant temp never went above 174 degrees.

I diced it up with Barker on his R. We had a lot of fun. It was a private track day with a total of 25 riders. At one point, Barker and I had the track to ourselves. Just us lapping as fast as we could ride. We ended up with a crowd watching the two Buells duking it out.

My bike seems to be eating coolant as well. I think one of my radiators might have a slow leak. I checked my tank at 100 miles and it was down 1/2 inch or so. Checked again at 600 miles and it was down 1/4 inch. 1,000 miles it was down 1/2 inch again.

chadhargis,
Did you guys go north on 75 through Atlanta about 8-8:30pm on Saturday night?
I saw an open trailer with a red CR and a white R. We passed those bikes on got on 285.

Ft_bstrd, I'm waiting because it's cold as balls here. 28 degrees as we speak, dealership is 120 miles away so I'm not making a special trip trailing. Might as well have a nice road trip next spring! Then can compare it to the old flash on the way home : ).

HAd my 09 1125R reflashed with the 142 issue on Saturday, although I was having a bit of grief with the rear AFV they are both of course now at 100 after the flash.

However the bike has never been smoother and gets the thumbs up from me.

Dirty John, I believe that would be the '141' as the latest 09R flash? If memory serves me correctly '142' was the CR flash immediately preceding the '152' CR flash. And yes, the latest flash is sweet!!

I did indeed replace my coolant with Water Wetter. Barker (white R is his) didn't, but I gave him a gallon of distilled water premixed with Water Wetter. He'll be at Tally this coming weekend on either his 1125R or his XB9R. He'll be there both days.

OK, lessee if this works.

All charts:
green = new bike, 12 miles
blue = stock bike, 300 miles, 12z flash
red = stock bike, 300 miles, 152 flash

First chart, "STD" factor

Next, "Uncorrected"

And finally, the "SAE" correction, which I think is the 'normal' way people run them

Again, I'm less concerned with absolute numbers - I'm just impressed by a) how much power and tq this bike has picked up during break-in, and b) how smooth the curves are after the 152 flash.

If you want the burn before the thaw, we can do your ECM by mail for you.

That's why I asked.

You making that offer to the entire BWB for 1125s still under warranty, we only pay S&H, other fee(s)?

If so, I'll have to keep that in mind if I run into problems with my local dealer.

I am discussing this service with Tom.

Since he has two 1125Rs, we have the ability to plug one into the bike and run the burns without your bike having to be here.

What I don't know is what the "rules" are concerning this.

If/when we decide to do this, we will make an announcement.

Do you think there would be much interest in this service?

What if there was a small price plus S&H?

Is that reasonable?

Yes, based on the oft repeated posts of owners who can't get the newest flash for whatever reason (distance to dealer, dealer not up 2 speed, etc., etc.)

What if there was a small price plus S&H?
If the price is reasonable, I think you'll find a market.

Just my opinion, but I really think there is a market. I'm pretty sure there are no authorized Buell dealerships in certain areas (e.g. Idaho) so this would be a blessing for folks in that situation. Now how "big" that market might be is another question that I don't have an answer too, but it's tempting to me, and I have a dealer ~10 miles from me.

Figure optimistically that you're going to eat ~1/2 hour of labor (installing & subsequently removing the ECM from Tom's bike) on top of the flash. If you can cut that time down, and/or devise a bench setup, your actual cost is reduced accordingly.

So let's get optimistic and say you can do the work in 15 mins. (not knowing what your shop rate is, let's figure $20 - $25 for your real work), then factor in the overhead of monitoring the receiving, handling, shipping & customer communications, I think you're in the ballpark of being reasonable at $40 + S&H.

Something else to investigate, but I "thought" the IC was tied to the ECM, so you'll definitely want to verify you can flash another ECM on Tom's bike & have it work correctly on another bike.

I believe Phil is correct - the flash and ECM are VIN-tied, I'm not sure if you can put ECM "X" in bike "Y", flash it, and have it work back in bike "X" without thinking it has become bike "Y".

And, even if it does "work"...I don't think DT will flash the same VIN number more than once. It'll know that VIN got the 152 (or whichever) flash and won't let it happen again. I think. Unless it thinks it's a replacement ECM for that bike, in which case I think it'll encode it to that VIN number. And I honestly don't remember if mileage is stored in the ECM or in the cluster...

But again, I'm not a tech (and I didn't sleep at a Holiday Inn Express, either). I just know where they keep the tools at work and I'm sneaky ; )

Firstly, let me say I am in full support of this idea. Secondly let me recount my instrument cluster swap experience: I bought my 1125R with a wrecked IC. I bought another used one off Ebay and installed it. I posed a question here about the possibility of this working/failing and I recieved all the usual 'it marries to the ECM & can't be done' talk. Nonetheless - after I guessed the 'security PIN' code for the IC I bought - it worked flawlessly. I have a feeling the reverse (same IC with different ECM) will work just fine. Just my 2 cents.

T_man, good to hear you overcame the IC/ECM "marriage" issue, so we know it can be done.

So that leaves us with supplying the VIN w/ the ECM before shipping to Fatty (provided he & Tom can work it out so that it's something they can do without taking a bath in the process).

If it can be done reasonably, Bumpus might have some "winter work" on their hands. Don't think it'll make them a mint, but it sure would help for 49 state bikes that are put up for the winter and no where near a dealer.

I do know that both the IC and ECM store mileage data independently. The advantage of this is that a new IC will not have to be "programmed" separately in order to have accurate mileage. The IC draws the correct mileage from the ECM. Conversely, if you need to swap out ECMs, the ECM will draw mileage information from the IC.

What I don't know is which one is dominant.

This may not work, but I thought it might be a service that would be of benefit. Always trying to kick around services you guys might find useful.

I made the trek to the dealer today to get the 152 flash, which the service writer assured me they installed. I didn't get a chance to talk to the tech.

Of course I wanted to verify this, so I hooked up the bike to ECMSpy when I got home and took a look at the EEPROM. It reported a firmware version of BUE2D231 and a Calibration ID of 255:Race.

Is that the correct information for the 152 flash?

Oh, and while I was there I spotted this...

Pretty sweet : )
