Hi;

I need to get a decent radar detector for my 1125. Any suggestions? I'd like to find a decent one without spending a fortune.

thanks

Jrfitzny posted a good thread.

I'm looking at the same (in a bit...). I was looking at the nicer escort detectors - easy to hard wire, but curious about the mounting options. I think it needs to be in the front center for best reception.

And from the other thread's end - what do you guys do about Rain?

Thx!

Superdave, I would follow the advice of many of your fellow riders from the link Jrfitzny left you...just use your head. Cops get paid to be good at writing tickets and some of them actually enjoy doing it. A radar/laser detector will never be able to defeat todays speed measuring devices and the only way you may get saved from getting clocked is 1. radar is being used and you are in a large amount of traffic (Doppler radar likes to bounce to a slightly larger objects like a car for a split second). 2. He has a donut in his hand. If a laser is being used, which is almost standard on the highways now, you are DOOMED. Don't forget about airplanes up in the air that are basically using a stop watch and a more experienced officer just needs to be able to articulate why he believes you were traveling too fast to write that ticket! If you are like the rest of us, sometimes you just took a chance on getting stopped to see what these beasts (1125R) could do. I am pretty certain about one thing, if you get stopped going around 165 MPH on a public road or get repeated speeding tickets, you might as well count on losing your license for awhile...hmmm, decisions, decisions.

The Escort and Valentine are the two models really worth considering. Both are good. Avoid anything from Rocky Mountain. I use an 8500 and I've been pleased. It's saved me more than once for sure.

I also use a laser shifter, and it can help in urban traffic. Bikes are somewhat more difficult to get a laser read on, and so a shifter CAN buy you a second or two. Out on the high mountains, and even the highway much of the time, the rural guys rarely have modern equipment, and if they are actively working the trap, you *are* going to see it in time to get your speed in check. In town it's definitely the hardest to protect yourself.

Ignore those saying they don't work. They do. They are NOT perfect, but do give a warning. In particular when out in the twisties, they are fantastic for telling you that smokey just ahead in that small town in our making revenue.

For the couple hundred they cost, you are likely to get your money back in saved stops, in my honest opinion. I won't drive any vehicle without one.

I'd love to see your shifter setup Jdugger! Pics or install thread? If i had the money this would be the way i'd go!

Mine's installed. Under the fairing. I'm traveling this week or I'd take a picture.

Rain? In a light sprinkle, I don't worry about it. If it rains, I don't ride. Ain't no fun.

I'm going to be purchasing an Escort ZR-3 after reading a couple reviews.

The installation might be cumbersome though.
