quote:

the question that should be asked is why an additional rear wheel bearing was considered necessary on the 2010 models if there was not a problem

My understanding, from reading various posts on various boards is that there is a problem.

But part of the problem is that the problem is VERY intermittent and there, at least to my knowledge, is no common failure mode.

Some have speculated water . . and poof there is a failure from a "known dry" bike.

Over torque (crushing) the spacer is a good theory . . . again, just nothing to back it up.

One thing that is ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN to eliminate ANY problem is the 3 bearing set up.

Think of it as 700% over kill.

Does anybody know if you wanted to retrofit the new 3 bearing system to the 08-09 models, is it necessary to change the swingarm as well?

The "three bearing" design in aftermarket racing wheels is very common...it is to help deal with the drive side shock loads.

The shock is better distributed between the drive side tandem bearing set, reducing the incidence of spalling and other related failure.

luis:

No change to the swingarm. The axle is different. When you buy the wheels, you need to also purchase the axle/ spacer/ bearing kit.

IIRC, it was under $300USD, not bad for a 700% improvement ;+}

Oh yeah I forgot, I guess the new bearing set up would not have helped my failure, since mine was on the brake side, not the drive side (more non-linear, abnormal data to toss into the equation).

Ccryder, you can order a "kit" that comes with all the spaces and axle and junk. Still needs the wheel bearings to be installed though.

Yep that's exactly what it says on the Buell site, for now.

DJ:
You have to have a 2010 wheel to start. After that you need the axle, spacer, bearing kit to make it fit an 09/08 swingarm.

From Buell's site:
XB Wheels - Phantom Metallic with Red Pinstripe
G0110.02A8BYDC Front $336.00
G0309.7AAYDC Rear $285.00

XB Wheels - Phantom Metallic with Red Pinstripe
Front wheel fits '03-later XB (except XB12X), 1125R® and 1125CR™.

The rear wheel comes without bearings, seals, and spacer. Bearing, Spacer & Axle Kit G1321.02A8 must be ordered in order for the rear wheel to fit '03-'09 XB (except XB12X) or Bearing, Spacer & Axle kit G1321.1AM must be ordered in order for the rear wheel to fit '08-'09 1125R®/1125CR™ models.

Prices are MSRP US$. All products may not be available in all markets.

Thanks CCryder, I have ordered the kit, now I will have to get hold of a 2010 rear wheel.

The kit in the UK costs as much in sterling as you lucky people can get it for in dollars in the USA.

The Buell website states that it will fit 08 and 09 1125R/CRs - do we really need a 2010 wheel?

DJ:

I think what they imply/ mean is that with the Bearing, Spacer & Axle kit G1321.1AM, a 2010 wheel will work on an 08'-09' 1125 swingarm. This kit can only be used on a 2010 rear wheel.

Court - with your contacts can we have a definitive answer to the question - is a 2010 wheel is needed to use the three bearing solution, no offence CCryder.

Good luck stuffing 3 LARGER bearings into a 2009 wheel.

This thread wandered off topic a bit...not uncommon on this forum.

The verdict is in on what the [original] problem was. Spoke to the dealer today. You may recall that I heard a sharp snap and then massive rear wheel wobble at 55 mph. My hypothesis was that the rear wheel bearings went.

Indeed, the wheel bearings were shot, but this was the secondary result of the primary problem. Somehow the pinch bolt on the rear axle drifted out and was completely missing (likely the noise I heard as it hit the wheel falling out). As you might imagine, this caused a series of problems (including bearing disintegration).

Oddly, the manual does not call for thread lock on the pinch bolt (as I recall). So, heads up...check your pinch bolt periodically (something I don't ordinarily check). Waiting for a new pinch bolt from Buell. Am hoping the dealer covers this (they've not seen the problem before).

Why would the pinch bolt falling out make any difference (in the short run)? I thought all it did was prevent the axle from falling out - Important, but not really interrelated with other things.

Very interesting theory but, that's why the rear axle on the 1125 is a LH thread. Any movement of the wheel on the axle will try and make it tighter.

So even loosing the pinch bolt, the axle would not loosen unless, it was not correctly torqued to begin with. Just follow the logic................... and physics.

I thought only the front axle was backwards threaded. Going out to check.

Ah I get it, are the 2010 bearings a greater outside diameter then, I am waiting for the kit to arrive.

Just got bike back from dealer. Unfortunately, was deemed not to be covered under warranty. Not clear who or what was at fault, but the bearing pic attached pretty well tells the story...
