Where is this located and what is it actually reading? Ambient, or intake air temps? It seems that on mine it varies a whole lot. For example, on my Sunday AM ride today the weather forecast was for a low of 39, the bank I was passing said 37 and the AT reading on the dash was 63. Now, I'm not saying I believe a public thermometer any more than most weather forecasts, but judging by the frost on the lawns and roofs, it was a lot closer to 37 than 63. I *think* that this runs rough at lower rpms (and from various threads believe this to be 'normal'), but could it be more that it's thinking it's warmer out than it really is and not properly adjusting air/fuel? It goes in this week for it's initial service and I've already talked to the service mgr about what flash it has - that would be a whole 'nother (long) story so maybe getting the current flash would fix it, but I'll wait for some collective opinions. The dealer has already pretty much told me that he doesn't think the temp reading is an issue. Brought it to their attention the day after I picked it up. "They all read wrong - my bagger is never right." was the exact quote. For the record, it was about 25 miles into my ride and had just putted through a small town after all highway ride to that point. | ||

The intake air sensor should be reading the temp of air the engine is actually ingesting..... Since the airbox is on top of the engine i could believe the 63* temp reading.... Go faster. it should drop the air intake temp. I noticed with my brief time on my R that sitting at idle the temp goes up and while cruising it drops.. | ||

The IAT is located at the very front of the intake snorkel. The ECM uses this information to continually adjust fuel and in some cases spark. The temp that you see on the dash is only updated while riding at particular speeds. The reason for this is that you could get false ambient readings while sitting at idle because of the rad fans blowing on it. You may have just hit a zone that isn't accounted for in the ECM for the ambient display. So the 63 may not have been a realistic ambient temp, but it would be a realistic intake air temp. | ||

Strongbad, Do you have any data stating what speeds or how many times the I/P updates ambient temp? Just curious since my ambient temp readings are now off the charts.. I been noticing some little quirks in the 600 miles I've rode so far, like the speedo dropping to 0 intermittantly. The ambient temp was typically a little higher (by about 10 deg). I brought my bike in to get the turn signal replaced, and got the ecm reflashed. On the ride home I noticed the ambient temp reading 85deg. on a 45deg day at cruising speed. It has been erratic since. The ambient temp will even rise while driving into the 90's. I'm thinking it's some sort of ground issue, poor connection at the I/P connector, or a faulty temp sensor. I can't see a ecu flash causing this issue but stranger things can happen. Guess I'll have to get the DVOM out. I'm riding an 08R |
