Anyone have any thoughts on exhaust wrap on these bad boys? Buell has done a great job with the guards on the pipes, but besides the (small) performance gain I am thinking wrapping the exhaust would also help increase the life of the pipes.

Just the opposite is usually true as for as life of the pipes.

Removed the heat shield and added two layers of ceramic wrap on my CR.

A reasonably good stainless will NOT be harmed by the heat/moisture the wrap causes.

Even short sections of carbon steel tube will live.

I had about a 10" section (three tubes) on one of my cars, 5 years...no holes.

P.s. - For my two cents....a header tube 3/4" away from the water pump isn't a good idea..!

Just passing along some info. The dealer recommended installing heat wrap. The reason he gave was simply that it reduced the amount of heat coming off the pipes and was more comfortable for the rider and cooler for the frame/fuel tank/fuel.

To add to what Aj states.....

The rear tube, is near the frame on the way forward. Then...it's too close to the water pump a little farther forward.

The front tube comes VERY close to the lower corner of the right side radiator...

What does heat do (when sitting still, and we ALL stop for red lights..!)...it rises...right up into the radiator.

I had my stock header pipes wrapped in an attempt to help keep the fuel from heating up so fast. Ehhh...kinda helped.

I agree with Mike, the pipes next to the water pump and the fuel pick up in not really a good idea in a hot State; nee: Texas.

The problem with the whole design is the metal to metal contact of the motor mount to the frame. That point of contact carries the heat right to the frame and to the fuel. You can see it very clearly in Chevy's photos.

I do think Chevy's "turbo wrap" is the most effective. The header wrap is so-so.

Once I get the new exhaust settled on the bike I plan to wrap it. Mainly for safety of kids and pets. Those big pipes stick out in the open.
