After a nice cozy ride in ohio we decided to hit up a local dunkin donuts for a coffee and donut. After we left she started to put her helmet on and say wtf is that smell .I said what smell, she said it smells like gas ,I said wtf and looked all over my bike for gas leaks.I then realized that she hung her helmet of the peg and had gas dripping into her helmet.I had this happen before and it melted my lenze on the helmet.Nothing new here.

Shouldn't hang your helmet on the pegs.

I laugh whenever someone has a helmet on a bar, peg, mirror. Didn't anyone teach you that's bad for the helmet?

On the seat most of the time.

On the ground in front of the bike, or on the not kickstand side of the bike.

On the seat with a cable-lock going around the chin bar, tight enough to keep it from falling.

my GF did the same thing while we stopped at a qdoba for some food. i saw the problem before it became one and moved the helmet for her. i then had to explain to her that this bike "leaked gas" and it was not like the other so dont hang your helmet there anymore.

Somebody recently showed that to me. I didn't know what that was used for and the owner's manual doesn't mention it.

I ended up putting one of the Ztechnik helmet locks on my 1125CR:
http://shop.ztechnik.com/cgi-bin/ztech/Z5505A.html ?search_model=bm-066

I actually like it a lot because it makes it much easier to store a helmet. It's certainly not designed to deter theft, but then somebody would have to go through a lot of trouble to take the helmet(s).

Years ago, I didn't have helmet locks on one bike I owned. I took my girlfriend to a concert and we left our helmets on the bike. When we got out of the show, the helmets were gone. Fortunately it wasn't illegal to ride without helmets and I got her home without any issues. But it did piss me off that somebody would take somebody's helmet.

On my R , I put my helmet on top of the airbox nestled under the windscreen. It fits just perfect and (knock wood) can't fall.
it seems to have another strange benefit...
people seem to stay back away from the bike.
I believe the very first thing we as riders,or even general public do when we see an interesting bike is to look into the cockpit area. I guess people wanna see how high the speedo goes. Now with your helmet nestled right in there, the cockpit is covered, so people stay back a step or two. Just my theory LoL, maybe a Badweb psychologist could prove me wrong.
and all this theory leads me back to my actual point---I am also guilty of learning the hard way about hanging helmets on the passenger peg 'gas drip' side. Wanted to keep my lid away from the hot pipe, so the passenger peg seemed safer. Fail.

You're assuming someone actually likes Fresno enough to ride on the back of his motorcycle.

Clip under the passenger seat, hook under the cowl? With that, I've already learned something new today and it's just barely 9AM ... I'll have to go out and have a closer look.

HOLY CRAP. I did the same exact thing except it was my helmet and not my wife's. I had to remove some of the side padding because the smell was too bad. I didn't think it was a good idea to pass out on the way home.

Haha. I will assume you are joking. Of all the things to do on a motorcycle, riding with a passenger is down on the list near riding in the rain...

Setting a helmet on the ground in Florida is NOT a good idea...Fire ants LOVE helmets...Trust me, you DO NOT want to realize that a herd of fire ants crawled into your helmet at the last stop.

I set my helmet on the right side mirror.

...be advised that any helmet exposed to gas like that is ruined...

...just the fumes from gasoline will ruin a helmet...

...the gas fumes degrade the styrofoam liner...

If degraded styrofoam is the issue, just jam a coffee cup in your helmet and you should be good to go!!

I tried that 'under windscreen / sitting on airbox @ the fuel cap' method. The helmet fits nicely there, although no theft protection.

That clip under the rear seat, no way I could use it and reinstall the cover - Too tight. I also didn't see any hooks in the front cowl area?

I set mine on the right side peg, but I also lock it if I'm going to be out of sight. I use a retractable ski lock with a 3 number combination to unlock. Works very well, and because the cable retracts it's very compact and fits under the rear seat or in a jacket pocket.

One --- maybe the only --- advantage for the 08: for a while, they came with a double-looped wire (like a figure 8) that can be used to secure a second helmet under the cowl, one on each side. Works good, looks good. If I ever lose mine, I will for sure make another. You can probably find a picture with SEARCH.
