Has anyone here found there speedometer and gear indicator working only some of the time?

In the two weeks that I have had the bike, the speedo has stopped working for several minutes at a time possibly 8-10 times. It is preceded by the gear indicator showing "--".

I am assuming they are related and possibly due to a bad gear sensor which then shuts down the speedo?

When I first got the bike, there was some large scratches on the face of the tach and the dealer recently replaced it. They don't really appear to have a clue what to look for or possibly don't care now that it is a bike they won't be selling (is this the future of service under warranty?).

Any help would help guide me to remedy the problem.

There is no gear sensor. The gear indicator is a calculation based on speed & gear ratios.

It sounds like you have a bad speedo sensor, or a loose connection. Either should be an easy fix under warranty.

Tpoppa, that's good info and would explain why Wolf experiences both simultaneously. It also answers what I was wondering the other day ... Why doesn't the bike remember what gear I was in when I pull the clutch in? I see in the manual that "--" is correct when the clutch lever is squeezed, but now I know why!

+1 on the loose connection
I had an intermittant speedo problem on my '08 ULY that was traced to a loose connection in the wiring harness.

Horrible service from dealers has been around even before the XB bikes : )

Because your not in gear. I got an aftermarket gear indicator on my XB, it gets all confused the moment you pull in the clutch.

i had an issue were i had no speedo. i took it to the dealership and just as he was saying that he needed proof i pulled out my cell and showed him a video i made. i was doing 50mph down a street and it said 0 on the display. it took them 2 tries to fix the issue. they put a new cluster on but did not know how to calibrate it. they had to call Buell for instructions. now every once in a while i look down and it will say 0mph but it is really rare. (i have an 08' with an 09' cluster)
