Looking over this thread to see if there had been any progress, I ran across this old post within this thread:

"Ok Red, I wasn't going to respond to this, but in a nutshell, if you look at the pair of 2.5" pipes that are in the same chamber as the ones I cut out, you might notice that they are both drilled in an entertaining pattern of small holes, roughly .050" in diameter. "

What the HELL are you on about?! Those holes are balance holes and enable the muffling action by creating reverberation within a double-hulled chamber. REMOVING THE S BENDS IS NOT AN ANSWER, IT IS A PROBLEM. And that includes the other iterations that are shown in this thread.

What's so hard to understand about that!? Put the damn' larger exit pipes all the way through into the final collector chamber -- thereby fully replacing the pair of 's' bends -- or you CANNOT GET A GAIN.

If you don't like the look of a 'third leg', I sure as hell don't mind. So put those oversized exits inside your muffler and run them all the way back into the final collector!

So, with a .3 hp "loss" this is a total failure? The objectives were sound, redirect the flow away from the rear and no loss of power. Hmm, I think I did it. It wasn't really to gain power, but it would have been nice to do so. It's got a good thump to it now, the wheel/brake/swingarm won't get soot on them and it runs like stock. Obviously there is more than one way to skin a cat, I did it my way. I see two nay-sayers in a small crowd of onlookers. I only posted this info for others to utilize. I fully expected that anyone with decent mechanical ability and the tools to do the job would use this info if they wished. Those that can, do. I think I'm in the "do" group.
Hammer away at me all you wish, I proved the results with multiple dyno runs, even went out of my way to make sure it got done on the same day. It didn't work the first time, but my 2nd try did.
I'm not sure I ever saw either of you post a before/after dyno set. Red, I saw the after on yours, but thats all. Throw a stock pipe back on it, take off whatever other mods you've done, ride it so the ecm learns, then dyno it as is. Throw all your stuff back on, run it again within 1/2 an hour. Post your results.
Mine was done with zero tuning. The ecm did NOT change between pipe changes, AFV's stayed at 110 front and 100 rear.
I'm sure with tuning, I could get a 20 hp gain, just like everyone else that's done it. Until you can post before/after results that are done on the same day, please shush. I was under the impression that this was a place to share info, not do a bunch of ankle-biting.

The pipe matches stock for performance, so why would I need to do any more than just buy the tune?

quote: I need to hit up a buddy of mine and have him render out some autocad stuff for me, maybe I'll see if he can do that one for me too. He's not a cheap worker though. Last time I talked to him, he was getting something like $200/hour. Sometimes I think I'm in the wrong business.

Dean,

PM me if you're interested in any AutoCad work, I've been a design draftsman for almost 20 years. And since I'm laid off I might be a tad cheaper than your buddy...

2nd try came in exactly the same as stock, 14:1 a/f ratio.

Hogluvr - I'll keep that in mind. Been busy the last few weeks, between work, the wife & kids, pc repair work and welding stuff, it's been hectic. I'm looking forward to a 4 day weekend, even though I'll be running my butt off. I need to find time for riding, but the weather is getting ready to turn crappy.

Dean,

Just a thought if/when you get around to it. Doesn't even have to involve $$. Like what I'm seeing, maybe I could swap my services for yours. Take some time to enjoy your family, and get a ride in before the weather turns to $hit!!

I thank you very much for sharing. I plan to do a similar mod to mine after the snow flys. Thats why Ive been watching this so close. I figure this will pacify me until I find a pipe that I like and can afford.

Last post for this, just a few side by side pics of the stock compared to modified stock for those that are curious to see what it looked like finished off the bike. Btw, the dirty one on the right is mine, I think I ran through a patch of tar somewhere last week.

Development is done here for this mod. It is what it is. Just better sound (deeper than stock) redirected exhaust flow and no loss of power. Not exactly the cheapest mod since it takes a bit of time to do, but once it's done, it can't fall out and won't rust, plus it looks pretty similar to stock.

On to other things now, but if you'd like something similar, there are ways of getting it done.

dadams,
Dude, fantastic, keep it up. This pipe is what a guy like me is looking for. You did exactly what you said you want to do. well done.
Now, before I do this myself, let me confirm: (i lost the plot somewhere)
1. open the box on top and remove the 2 s-pipes
2. remove the 2 standard outlets
3. install two 1" outlets.

Is this correct? And i do not need a other ecm, etc. Standard will be fine?

They're not 1" tubes, it's 1.75" tube. This mod works just like the stock can, so no tuning is required. If you've never done this kind of work, be cautious of where you cut and how much you take out.
